Well, across the two ties with Poole Town the games just about had it all. A fourth minute red card, an equaliser in the fourth minute of added time, two floodlight failures and a last minute goal by a goalkeeper but it was Hayes & Yeading who held their nerve to progress to the Emirates FA Cup 1st round proper and a home tie with Sky Bet League One side Oxford United.
After a delay to the kick-off at the Black Gold Stadium due to floodlight failure, it was United who started quickly with James Clark winning possession in the Dolphins half of the field, he fed the ball to Hassan Jalloh who turned his marker before trying his luck from 20 yards but his effort was comfortably held by home stopper Luke Cairney.
Within a minute the home side created an opening of their own as the ball was played in from the left creating a shooting chance that was blocked out by the United defence and then with less than 10 minutes played, darkness fell as the lights failed once again leading to another break of circa 30 minutes before the game could resume in the hope the lights would stay on this time around.
After play re-started both teams took a while to get going, the hosts having a large share of possession but once again finding it hard to break through skipper Liam McDevitt and his defensive line. On 22 minutes United almost Cairney unawares as Phil Roberts received a throw-in on the right side, his looping cross sailed over the home ‘keeper before dropping inches wide of the far post.
Within minutes the home side worked a neat move in and around the United box which resulted in Harry Baker laying the ball off to Saturday’s goalscorer Jake Cope but this time he blazed over the United goal.
Minutes later Omar Rowe got to a throughball first before being unceremoniously upended by Will Spetch, with United fans crying out for a red card, only a yellow was produced by referee Lamport which considering the distance from goal seemed an acceptable decision.
Just prior to the half hour mark another chance came for the visitors as Rowe again burst forwards, a nice interchange with Roberts saw Rowe advance on goal only for his effort to be blocked away by Cairney.
Minutes later Cairney showed his qualities to deny Rowe once more, this time tipping over a 20 yard drive that appeared to be heading for the top corner. This was only to be a temporary reprieve for the hosts though as Toby Little’s corner was headed home by Joe Grant to give United the lead.
Sadly for Paul Hughes’ side that lead only lasted six minutes as Brooks fed Cope in the United box, Jack Smith kept out the initial shot but the loose ball ran back to Brooks who fired home the equaliser from close range.
Two minutes from the interval the home side had another good opening as a corner kick was played deep, the ball was only partially cleared but when the subsequent shot came in, McDevitt did well to get a block in with his head before the rebound was fired high and wide.
Another chance for United came soon after when Clark’s cross was only partially cleared by Jamie Whisken, Jalloh collected and after a quick side-step tried his luck from the edge of the box only for the ball to go the wrong side of the upright.
With both sides looking to the half-time break at 1-1, the deadlock was broken in spectacular fashion before the whistle could come. Jalloh picked up the ball on the right side, his inch perfect cross saw the home defence static as Clark planted a superb volley into the back of the Dolphins net to send United in a goal ahead at the break.
After a shorter than usual break due to the floodlight problems, it was United who looked the sharper and within three minutes were two goals to the good. Jalloh broke into the Dolphins box only for Cairney to block away his shot with an outstretched boot however just a minute later Jalloh’s free-kick from the right side of the Dolphins box picked out club record goalscorer Little who volleyed home his 43rd goal in United colours.
The hosts started to push forwards as you would expect in a one off cup tie and being two goals adrift. Corby Moore fired in a free-kick that Brooks headed over and this was quickly followed by Baker firing the ball across the United six yard box from the right side but without a touch in the middle the ball ran away to safety.
Jack Smith and the United defence were at their busiest around the hour mark. Brooks got his head to a deep centre but Smith kept the ball out with his boot and this was followed by a Jack Dickson cross that was met by Cope but Smith held on comfortably.
A lofted ball over the United defence following a cleared corner saw the ball drop to Will Spetch who volleyed into Smith’s arms and even when Smith was beaten by a looping header, captain McDevitt was on hand to head the ball away off the line.
Despite all of this pressure United did see a slice of the action at the other end but everything tried seemed to end in a dead end before Smith was again called upon when he pushed away a close range effort from Brooks.
Five minutes from time a quick United break saw Jalloh draw his marker before playing the ball square to Rowe, the tricky United midfielder advancing on goal only for Cairney to block away his shot from the edge of the area.
In stoppage time Cairney was to have the final say but not in traditional fashion, the Dolphins ‘keeper going forwards for a set piece and when the ball dropped to him on the left corner of the box he controlled it and hit a curling shot that ended up in the United net courtesy of a wicked deflection that left Smith wrongfooted.
United however saw out the remainder of stoppage time before the whistle below to wild celebrations from players and fans alike as United progressed to a first round tie against Oxford United at the SKYex.
