Hayes & Yeading United Football Club

Today's first qualifying round draw in the Emirates FA Cup leaves United awaiting who our opposition will be until four days before the tie takes place.

What we do know is that we will face either AFC Rushden & Diamonds or Deeping Rangers at the SKYex on Saturday 8th September however due to the recent Bank Holiday, their replay will not be taking place until the evening of Tuesday 4th after the two sides drew 1-1 in Lincolnshire at the weekend.

The club have confirmed that popular forward Ismael Ehui has today signed for Hanwell Town with the experienced striker looking for regular football that did not appear possible at present with United.

We thank Ish for his efforts for United and wish him well with his new club, except when we play Hanwell of course.

Hayes & Yeading United are delighted that our own General Manager, Derrick Matthews, was named as runner-up in the Groundsman of the Year awards for the Southern League at the annual FA awards that were held at St George’s Park on August 9th.

In our first season back playing at home after many years away from the local area, Derrick lovingly prepared and looked after the pitch at the SKYex Community Stadium. It was a labour of love which meant that his efforts have not been overlooked by the club, local community and the footballing world.

When many a game was falling foul to the weather in a torrid time after Christmas last season, Derrick ensured that the pitch was in tip-top condition for every single home match. In fact we did not have to postpone a single first team match in the 2017/18 season, a testament to Derrick’s dedication and devotion.

To honour Derrick and the work he puts in, the club decided to nominate him for the FA Groundsman of the Year. Andy Corbett, Club Secretary who nominated Derrick said ‘The decision to nominate Derrick was an easy one to make. His pitch was by far and away the best playing surface in the South East. The club wanted to make sure that he was recognised at a National Level too. We’re absolutely over the moon that he was given an award’.

The hard work for Derrick continued over the summer with extensive work on the pitch to prepare it for the 2018/19 season back in the Isthmian League. Even though most of the country was basking in hot temperatures that turned a lot of pitches yellow, Derrick maintained our pitch throughout. We’re lucky in that we have our own ‘well’ to draw water from to help keep the pitch green and moist.

Skipper Scott Donnelly was substituted at half time yesterday, due to feeling extremely unwell.

Scott was taken to hospital as a precaution, and is now at home recuperating. He will now miss at least the next two games whilst he recovers, and we wish him all the very best in his recuperation.

Special thanks go to the club sports therapist Kim Burkin-Roberts whose expertise was first class, and Kelly Matthews who assisted throughout whilst awaiting the ambulance.
