Having given themselves a real shot at staving off relegation on Saturday at Dunstable, Paul Hughes’ Hayes & Yeading side slipped to a 2-0 home defeat against a very well organised Kings Langley side which sees United drop down for the second successive season.

United started OK in front of one of our largest home crowds of the season with an early chance falling to Mitchell Weiss who blazed over having received the ball from a Tom Broadbent flick on following a long Josh Chamberlain throw-in.

Ten minutes later visitors had their first sight of goal when a low corner kick was miss-kicked by Anthony Edgar in his attempt to clear, the ball falling to Ryan Plowright who fired high and wide on the turn.

Considering how important the game was to both sides, it was fully 23 minutes before either ‘keeper had to make a serious save, it was United’s Danny Boness who did well to beat away a Plowright strike after good approach play from Jerry Amoo on the left.

Kings ‘keeper Xavi Comas was not really called into action until two minutes before the break when Broadbent beat the wall with a low 25 yard free-kick however Comas dealt with it comfortably.

As had happened in the away game in Hertfordshire, it was Kings Langley who again struck in first half stoppage time although I am still somewhat mystified as to where referee Read found the 3+ additional minutes from. The visitors were awarded a free-kick on halfway, much to their gaffers annoyance as he wanted the advantage! The ball was fired long into the United box, Boness under pressure from Amoo allowed the ball to slip from his grasp which presented Plowright with a tap in.

United started the second half looking for a quick strike as first Broadbent got his head to a David Hutton free-kick only for the ball to go inches over the top and then Anthony Edgar and Karl Stevenson combined on the right, the latter’s cross being struck goalwards first time by Weiss but Comas was equal to the effort.

Two minutes later United’s survival task became even greater as a long ball up to Amoo saw the wide man use his pace to outstrip his marker before planting the ball coolly past the on-coming Boness.

More half chances came United’s way as the half progressed, Weiss and Richie Whittingham combined to set up Hutton but his 18 yard effort was just off target before a low Broadbent drive from fully 30 yards was fumbled by Comas but Mayo Balogun was on hand to clear the danger for the visitors.

As the final 10 minutes arrived, Boness saved from Lewis Toomey before Kabba had two sights of goal, the first being a header from a Leo Donnellan cross that Comas caught diving to his right and with just 2 minutes left, a rasping Chamberlain shot was pushed out by Comas to the on loan Wealdstone striker but he prodded the ball wide of the target from a couple of yards out which pretty much summed up United’s season.
