Hayes & Yeading’s management team and several squad members returned to their old home at Gaywood Park and somehow contrived to be beaten 1-0 by the hosts from Kings Langley.

But for the referee being too quick on his whistle, United would have had an early lead in the ninth minute when a foul was committed in the centre circle against United, Josh Chamberlain quickly took control and almost instantly planted a perfect shot from the halfway line over Kings ‘keeper Xavi Coman and into the net only to be denied by referee Mr Anastasiou blowing for a free-kick without giving time for the advantage to come to the fore.

Minutes later United wasted a golden chance to take the lead when Soloman Sambou won possession and fed the ball to Mitchell Weiss, the striker picking out Chamberlain at the far post but his downward header with the goal gaping was too close to Coman who was able to tip the ball over.

The remaining 30+ minutes of the first half turned into a real turgid affair with nobody really getting a look in on goal until stoppage time when a short United corner saw Ryan Hope dwell on the ball too long and he was dispossessed with the ball being fired downfield to the left side of the United box where a free-kick was conceded. David Hutton curled the free-kick in, over all and sundry including Danny Boness’s attempted punch and the ball nestled in the top corner of the United net giving the hosts an undeserved lead at the break.

The home side could have doubled their lead early after the break when another Hutton free-kick was played in, this time it was met by the head of Ryan Plowright but his effort sailed over the bar.

United’s first chance of the second half came just before the hour mark when Hope collected the ball on the right and sent Weiss through the middle the striker got his toe to the ball but was denied by Coman who was sharply off his line.

On the hour the United management team changed formation and personnel as Cole Brown and Dylan Kearney were thrown into the fray in place of Mahlondo Martin and Hope.

Brown was quickly into the action as his deep cross picked out Chamberlain at the far post but he struck his first time effort wide of the target. Brown was then denied by Coman blocking at his feet before fellow substitute Kearney was clearly pulled back by the shirt as he entered the Kings box only for referee and assistant to fail to see the obvious foul.

As the game closed out the home side became more thankful than ever to the excellent Coman. Kearney and Brown combined with the latter once again picking out Chamberlain at the far post, his sweet volley was pushed out by Coman who was then quick enough to block Chamberlain’s follow up.

Stoppage time saw United charge through the middle of the Kings area only for an inadvertent hand to push the ball away, referee Anastasiou this time seeing the offence and United were awarded a penalty. Sadly for United, Weiss’s weak kick was saved by Coman and it was the Hertfordshire side that took all the spoils, thanks to an excellent display of goalkeeping from Coman and United’s continuing inability to find the net.
