Hayes & Yeading’s new management team saw their side progress to the third round of the Southern League Cup with a 3-0 victory over Egham Town at Holloways Park on Tuesday evening.

Paul and Ritchie made just one change from their starting XI at Leamington with Academy skipper James Taylor coming in at left-back for the unavailable Jack Kelly.

Both sides started with attack on their minds and within the first 10 minutes both could have scored. The first chance fell to the visitors, Peter Dean getting across his marker at the near post only to be denied by the outstretched leg of United ‘keeper Danny Boness. Within minutes striker Mitchell Weiss met a corner at the other end with a downwards header that bounded over the Egham crossbar.

Weiss was denied by a goal line clearance by Kurtney Brooks soon after before a run from midfield on 25 minutes by Ryan Hope saw the midfielder’s shot deflected inches wide of the Egham post.

Two minutes later the visitors went as close as they could without scoring, Dean’s free-kick being tipped onto the underside of the United crossbar by Boness before being scrambled clear by Manny Adebowale.

Chris Moore curled an effort just wide for the visitors before United took the lead on 33 minutes as Terence Carter collected a slide-rule through ball from Josh Hutchinson and advanced towards the area before sliding the ball under the dive of the unprotected James Norris.

United pushed on looking for another, Hutchinson himself was denied by Norris’s outstretched boot before a curling effort from Weiss went just the wrong side of the upright.

United’s earlier good work looked to have come undone just before half time when referee Joshua Ainscow pointed to the spot, Adebowale adjudged to have tripped Dean in the box. Gareth Chendlik took charge from 12 yards but was denied by Boness who saved well at the foot of his post.

Boness soon saved again, this time from Moore before United doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time, Mahlondo Martin’s shot was only palmed out by Norris and Weiss was sharpest to the loose ball, prodding home from close range.

The first action of note after the break saw United net a third. Weiss collected the ball on the left, his pinpoint cross being met at the far post by Hutchinson who rose above Norris to place his header in off the right hand post.

Despite being three goals adrift, Egham continued to put pressure on the United defence, Boness saving low down from Dean before a header by Reece Yorke struck one of his own teammates before being cleared from inside the 6 yard box.

Substitute Dylan Kearney was the next to go close for United after the striker collected a neat pass from Weiss and hit a first time shot that Norris did well to keep out with his legs.

The final chances of the game both fell to the visitors substitute Brendan Matthew, his first being a curling effort from 18 yards that crashed back off the crossbar and then in the final minute he collected ball in the box but screwed his shot wide of the target.
