With games rapidly running out in United’s bid to avoid relegation, this was a game that the home side really needed to get something from, sadly in a largely chanceless game the only strike came from the visitors seven minutes before the break as they continue their push for the play-offs.

The visiting Puritans started well in the sunshine at Holloways Park and really should have taken the lead on 12 minutes. Mark Bell found space on the left and crossed to Ricky Johnson, the strikers nod down falling perfectly to Conor McDonagh who blazed over on the half volley from eight yards with just Danny Boness and the United goal in his line of vision.

Just over ten minutes later the visitors went even closer when Luke Carnell rose highest to meet a Bell corner, the defender’s looping header beating Boness before coming back off the face of the United crossbar.

A couple of minutes later a smart move down the right by United led to a partial opening, a pair of scorpion style flicks by Sahr Kabba and then Dylan Kearney saw the ball into the path of the on-coming Frankie Jones but a heavy touch saw the ball run away from him into the arms of Jack Harding in the Puritans goal.

Ten minutes later a chipped ball over the visitors defence set Kabba away, the striker being denied a chance to test Harding by a well timed Tom Bradbury interception.

The Puritans took the lead soon after. A Bradbury throw-in down the left was nodded back to him by McDonagh, the full-backs’ cross picking out Johnson who flicked the ball on to McDonagh and the striker was not going to miss a second time as he fired past Boness from close range at the near post.

The half closed with Bell hitting a free-kick across goal and wide of the far post from the corner of the box and United went in a goal adrift.

United came out with a bit more forwards momentum in the second period but didn’t create much of note until the introduction of top scorer Mitchell Weiss just before the hour mark. The first chance created came on 65 minutes when Jones beat Bradbury on the right before squaring the ball to a well placed Richie Whittingham, the midfielder pulling his shot well wide of the target.

Within seconds United had their best chance of a goal when Weiss was played through on goal, he outpaced his marker but Harding stood up well and when the blocked drive came back at pace slightly behind Weiss, his dragged back shot went agonisingly the wrong side of the upright.

Kabba hit an angled shot just over with 15 minutes remaining and that was all United could muster against a solid Banbury back line who appeared happy to settle for the single goal win although it could have been doubled in the sixth minute of added time when Zac McEachran broke away on goal, Boness pulling off a fine save to at least keep the deficit to one, sadly seconds later referee Staynings brought the game to it’s conclusion and United’s hunt for survival goes on.
