Hampton & Richmond Borough won through to the next round of the Lucas Fettes Cup with a penalty shoot out victory after an entertaining 3-3 draw which ended in remarkable circumstances, as both teams scored in stoppage time.

The first chance came from a Jack Thomson-Wheeler free-kick which found Curtis Cyrus right in front of goal, but he couldn't control his volley. Another set piece opportunity arose soon afterwards as Colin Mugoya headed an in swinging corner wide from point blank range. However, it was the home side who scored first from their own corner as Rimmell Straker's low centre found Daniel Makowski who tapped home from six yards.

United equalised on 26 minutes, as another Thomson-Wheeler delivery found Cyrus at the back post and he controlled before firing a shot which deflected in back across goal. However, parity didn't last long as Charlie Ten-Groten Huis floated in a free kick which Joe Wallbank flicked in with his head.

United responded as Charlie Mitchell cut in from the right and teed up Siju Odelusi, but although his shot was bobbled, it eluded Hampton keeper Liam Beach but dribbled wide of the left hand post. Just before half-time, some trickery inside the box from Bruno Morais lit up an evening that was becoming bitterly cold and he got a firm shot away which Beach blocked with his feet.

United's best spell came at the start of the second half. The first shot on target came from United as Nat Mensah squared the ball for Cyrus whose low shot was fielded by Beach. Morais then got in behind the hosts' defence but a recovering challenge from Hameed Kingston-Murphy sent his shot across the face of goal. He then combined well with Conor Tierney on the left and curled a stunning shot on the turn from the edge of the area which Beach pushed wide at full stretch.

Although United remained in the ascendency, the final ball seemed to be lacking until with thirteen minutes left, a quick break from deep culminated in Cyrus beating Kingston-Murphy down the left flank and sending the ball into the middle. It was slightly behind Mensah but the forward did very well to stretch his neck muscles and angle his header into the corner to equalise. Hampton responded with their first second half shot on target as Makowski broke away but Upton blocked his shot.

Then came the memorable stoppage time, Wallbank rose highest again from Madkour's deep corner to power his header home. However, United responded immediately as substitute Rico Luis curled the ball into the box and fellow sub Ben Slade looped a header over Beach and in. Still there was time for a goalmouth scramble where the ball just eluded Mensah from a corner and Beach eventually gathered it in.

So to penalties and although Thomson-Wheeler scored the first, Mensah's penalty was well saved by Beach. Hampton kept scoring but Cyrus hit the post and Hampton ended up winning 4-2 on penalties.
