Hayes & Yeading's last chance of silverware for the season disappeared at Reynolds Field on Tuesday evening as United were dumped out of the Middlesex Senior Cup by Southern Leaguers Hanwell Town at the semi-final stage.

Despite a strong United side being fielded by Manager Phil Babb, the lack of goals in recent times continued to haunt his side as the hosts scored the only goal from a contentious spot kick awarded by referee MacKenzie after half an hour.

United 'keeper Grant Smith, who replaced Calum Kitscha who was in Cyprus playing for England C, was called into action after just three minutes when he was forced to palm out a well struck Connor Duffy shot, the loose ball returning to the Hanwell man who beat Smith only for a well placed Jim Fenlon to clear off the line.

United started to find some forwards motion on a sticky pitch that cut up virtually from the off following the heavy rain of the previous evening and in the 11th minute a half cleared attack fell to Tom Derry whose low drive was well handled by former United under 18 product Alex Tokarczyk in the hosts goal.

Smith was soon in action again as Billy Adcock received the ball on the right and cut into the United box before firing a low shot that Smith held comfortably.

On the half hour mark the hosts were awarded a somewhat soft spot kick as Fenlon jumped and won a cross from the right only to be adjudged to have got to the ball by unfair means and a penalty was awarded which Michael Buckley duly converted.

Penalty controversy continued minutes later as Derry broke into the Hanwell area, he was clearly pushed to the ground right in front of the assistant referee only for United's appeals to be waved away by referee MacKenzie, to the disbelief of the United players.

An early Kadell Daniel corner for United was met by Derry but Tokarczyk held comfortably before United made a double change up top with the arrival of Dylan Kearney and Elliot Benyon in place of Derry and Rhys Murrell-Williamson.

The miday point in the second half saw a great chance for United to pull level when Luke Williams burst through onto a loose ball but he was denied by an excellent block from Tokarczyk who closed him down quickly.

Hanwell went close to a second shortly afterwards when a corner from the left was headed back across goal by Oliver Duffy to Ian Bywater whose header went inches wide of the United goal. The ball was immediately launched upfield to Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe who advanced to the edge of the box and hit a rasping drive that was just too high to trouble Tokarczyk.

The impressive Connor Duffy then tried his luck from long range forcing an excellent catch from Smith as the ball looked to be swerving out of his grasp.

United's best chance of an equaliser came as the clock hit ninety. Kearney and Benyon combined to help the ball into the path of skipper Dean Inman who met the bouncing ball on the volley from just inside the box only for his effort to miss the target by inches and cup glory for another season ended.
