Hayes & Yeading’s under 18 side maintained their 100% start to the season with a 3-1 victory over last season’s pacesetters Staines Town on Tuesday evening.
The visiting Swans were almost off to the perfect start however when after just five minutes a cross from the left picked out Fabio Nunes inside the United box, his drive being kept out at point blank range by United keeper Tyler Wootten.
Two minutes later United had the ball in the Swans net when Josh Odunwo headed home at the far post after Taofiq Olomowewe headed the ball back from the edge of the box, unfortunately a raised assistant’s flag ruled the United striker to be offside.
United did take the lead within a minute though when the ball was played through the middle to Prince Mbengiu and he confidently slid the ball past Swans keeper Phil Clarke.
A passing combination between Odunwo, Mbengiu and Nathaniel Mensah ended with the latter’s shot being held by Clarke and then at the other end just after the half hour mark, Wootten was again required, this time holding onto a sharp shot on the turn from Kai Saunders.
Onunwo flicked a header inches wide of the Swans goal before play switched to the other end and Wootten conceded a penalty for a challenge in his area on Harry Martin. Swans skipper Joe Aribo stepped up and despite Wootten choosing the correct way, he was unable to repeat his heroics of the previous week when he saved two spot kicks and the game was again all square.
United had two further chances before the break, Jalon Rowe had a shot from 25 yards parried by Clarke before being cleared and despite being fouled, Odunwo was given the advantage by referee Mr Rea, the strikers cross picking out Kwaku Owusu-Ansah who saw his goalbound shot blocked by a fine challenge by Tariek McDowall-Gonzales.
It was the visitors who came out quicker after the break. Nunes tried from distance without really troubling Wootten and then a cross was allowed to bounce in the United box, Aribo lifting the ball over Wootten who must have got the smallest of touches to take it wide as a corner was awarded that came to nothing.
United manager Simon East made a telling substitution on 70 minutes, introducing Senesei Koroma-Ice in place of Owusu-Ansah, as the striker repeated his feat from the previous match by scoring twice within ten minutes of arriving on the pitch.
His first came in the 76th minute when Mbengiu won the ball in a tackle and advanced towards the Swans area, sliding the ball neatly to Koroma-Ice who coolly slotted the ball past Clarke, a scenario played out again four minutes later with Koroma-Ice receiving the ball from Mbengiu and firing past Clarke.
In between the two United strikes the visitors almost bagged a second of their own when Aribo was put through, he lobbed the ball over the advancing Wootten only to be denied by a superb goal-line clearance by Oneal Rowe who had read his intentions and raced to cover.
Chances still came as the game drew to a close, Wootten tipped a fiercely hit Danny Boateng drive onto the United crossbar and at the other end Tamille Roache was only just wide with an angled shot across the face of the Swans goal.
In stoppage time a last minute toe away by United skipper Ben Peden saw Kain Samuel denied what would have been a last minute consolation for the visitors.
