HYUFC Hayes & Yeading Utd 3
Wingate & Finchley 1

Hayes & Yeading scored a third consecutive pre-season 3-1 victory as Wingate & Finchley were defeated on the United training pitch at the Sharda Glass Community Stadium.

United took early control of the game without finding the net as Dean Inman met a Jack Mills free-kick only for his header to go wide off the post and then a long ball down the centre from Charlie Wassmer sent Frankie Merrifield through but he screwed his shot wide with just keeper Cain Davis to beat.

Stefan Cox then saw a 25 yard drive held by Davis before the same player raced in from the right and set up Luke Medley who saw his goalbound effort deflect wide off a defender.

Medley should have opened the scoring in the twelfth minute when good work inside the box by Josh Webb saw him tee up the striker who side footed his shot across goal and agonisingly wide of the far post.

The breakthrough that United deserved eventually came on 36 minutes when Webb collected the ball 20 yards from goal and coolly lofted it over the advancing Cain into the visitors net.

Five minutes later the visitors went close when a cross from the right was met on the volley by Spencer McCall but it flew over Ashley Harris’s goal without troubling the United keeper.

A minute from the break the lead doubled as Davis and one of his defenders got in a mix up with a back-pass and Merrifield showed good alertness to nip in and roll the ball into the open net.

With changes flowing, it was no surprise that the second half took a while to get going, the first real opening going to way of the visitors midway through the half as substitute Leon Smith clipped the ball over diving United keeper James Warrington only for Charlie Wassmer to clear the ball from inside the 6 yard box.

Seconds later Tom Bird almost made it three for the home side as his curling effort from the edge of the box just failed to creep in at the far post.

Warrington did well a few minutes later as Smith again went through on goal and as the United keeper went to ground, he needed a strong hand to block the shot that looked to be clearing his dive with Wassmer clearing the danger.

Davis was soon in action at the other end, making a one handed save to deny former United under 18 winger Michael Bryan who had connected well on the volley after a Mills corner was partially cleared to the edge of the box.

Two goals, one apiece, came soon after and within seconds of each other. First to strike were United as Szymon Sidorowicz, playing as an emergency striker, cut the ball back from the bye-line to an incoming Kamaron English who thrashed the ball past Davis giving the keeper no chance.

Wingate soon had one back though as almost straight from the re-start the ball was played through the middle to Hector Mackie who slid the ball past Warrington’s dive.

Smith had the ball in the United net with the final kick of the game only to be denied for an infringement in the build up.
