Hayes & Yeading's opening pre-season outing after lockdown in March saw the visitors from Westfield earn a 2-0 victory on United's training pitch, behind closed doors, on a sweltering Saturday afternoon in August.

The United side included a good smattering of first team squad players along with a couple of trialists and some of our up and coming youth side.

Under 18's stopper Lewis Lavin was to be beaten within the opening minute when the visitors broke away on the left side and the United defence allowed the pull-back to the edge of the box where the waiting Westfield player smashed the ball home into the top corner of the United net.

In truth the 45 minutes that followed were of very little incident, probably due to the near 90 degree heat and this being the first real action for some five months since the pandemic hit the world.

The best opening for the hosts in the first period came on 14 minutes when the returning Dylan Kearney did well to hold up the ball on the right side before sending strike partner Francis Amartey through, his initial effort was well blocked by the visitors 'keeper with Amartey quickly regaining possession on the left, his ball across the area found Jamie Hanlon but his shot was just too high.

After the break Lavin was quickly in action once again, this time the young United 'keeper did well to tip over a Westfield header at the far post following another decent cross from the flanks.

Two minutes later United should probably have levelled, Omar Rowe won the ball in the opponents half and advanced to the corner of the area before sliding the ball to Kearney in the centre, the visiting custodian did well to block out the initial effort with his defence moping up the rebound.

On the hour United were grateful to Lavin once again as the visitors collected the ball inside the United box and took aim for the far corner, the ball being deflected wide by Lavin's outstretched right boot.

Ten minutes later the visitors did have a second though when a free-kick was awarded some 25 yards from goal, the taker firing the ball under the United wall and beyond Lavin's dive into the corner of the United net.

Five minutes later and again United should have been off the mark, under 18 striker Harley Sells controlled the ball brilliantly on the right of the Westfield area and as the 'keeper came out he squared it to his trialist strike partner who didn't get enough on the shot and the defender on the line cleared the effort.

The same player had another opening in stoppage time, having collected the ball on the edge of the area he proceeded to fire straight at the 'keeper and the ball was cleared with United falling to defeat.

We thank Westfield for coming to United and wish them well for the coming season.
