Hayes & Yeading drew for the first time this pre-season with Karl Cunningham's 90th minute strike from the edge of the box wiping out an early opener for the hosts from former United striker Lewis Toomey.

United started well enough at the Broadmead Stadium, forcing former United 'keeper Xavi Comas into an early save when Jack Williams collected the ball on the left of the Comrades box, his low effort was pushed out by the stopper with the home defence clearing as Dylan Kearney closed in.

Five minutes later United were creators of their own downfall when a low Alie Bangura cross was not cleared and the ball eventually ran loose to Lewis Toomey at the far post and he rolled it into the vacant net to give the home side the lead.

On 16 minutes another error at the back almost cost United another as Lewis Toomey broke free on the right flank, his low centre was spilled by United 'keeper Renell McKenzie-Lyle and Bangura nipped in to take possession, his shot being blocked wide by an alert United defender.

A minute later the hosts could have been down to ten men when United's two outfield trialists combined with the ball being fired forwards for Charlie Lawrence to chase in the left channel, Comas came flying from goal and was adjudged to have brought him down in full flight towards the goal with the referee only giving a free-kick when a red card could possibly have been shown had this been a competitive fixture.
Comas was in action immediately as he pushed Scott Donnelly's free-kick around the post.

A minute either side of the half hour mark Comas again twice denied United an equaliser proving what an excellent 'keeper he is. Siju Odelusi fired a free-kick from halfway into the opposition box, the ball was nodded back to Donnelly who saw his low volley pushed wide.

Siju Odelusi again fired the ball forwards minutes later, this time it was set for Francis Amartey who saw his shot deflect wide. The resultant corner was rolled to Sanmi Odelusi who saw his low shot pushed wide by Comas.

United made four changes at the break with the most visible being a return between the sticks for regular 'keeper Jack Smith.

The home side almost grabbed a second within minutes of the re-start as Bangura found space in the left channel and fizzed a low cross come shot across the face of the United goal and wide of the far post.

Comas again denied United on 55 minutes as Amartey raced onto a Karl Cunningham throughball only for his effort to be touched wide by Comas with the award of a goal-kick both surprising United's players and denying the stopper credit for another fine save.

Just past the hour mark Smith was required to deny his former teammate at United, Lewis Toomey, with the United stopper pushing away the strikers angled shot with the United defence mopping up.

Minutes later the Comrades should have notched a second and potentially decisive goal when a cross from the right side picked out Bangura unmarked in front of goal but the winger somehow managed to toally miss his kick and the danger evaporated thankfully for United.

In the 78th minute a deep Ryan Neufville cross from the right was met by Bangura but his far post header went across the United goal and wide of the far post.

The final few minutes saw United press hard for a leveller. Four minutes from time Kearney saw his shot on the turn from the edge of the box comfortably held by Comas and then with the game about to go into added time United struck. Danny Pappoe won the ball in the middle of the park and threaded it forwards to Cunningham, the United midfielder controlling the ball before firing low beyond Comas's outstretched hand from the outside of the box and into the bottom corner.

We thank Berkhamsted for their hospitality and wish them well for the coming season.
