Despite a somewhat lacklustre performance against Wingate & Finchley, it is United who progress to the next round of the Buildbase FA Trophy courtesy of a stoppage time winner from skipper Liam McDevitt, amazingly his first competitive goal for United.

Manager Paul Hughes made three changes to Saturday’s startin XI for this replay, Keano Robinson returned from suspension in place of the injured Ismail Yakubu while James Clark and Hassan Jalloh were preferred on this occasion to Lyle Della-Verde and Toby Little who both dropped to the bench.

Things started poorly for United and as had happened on Saturday Wingate got off to a flyer with a goal inside ten minutes. This time the scorer was veteran midfielder Ahmet Rifat who collected the ball just outside the United box before hitting a shot with the outside of his boot that squeezed past Jack Smith’s dive into the far corner.

United started to find a bit of momentum going forwards for a short spell, Phil Roberts played an excellent cross-field pass to Hassan Jalloh, he played the ball inside to Elliott Buchanan who took a neat touch before striking a volley that sadly went the wrong side of the upright.

Three minutes later visiting skipper and ‘keeper Shane Gore was forced into action for the first time. James Clark found Omar Rowe in an advanced position, he set himself for a strike with a controlled touch only for Gore to push his effort wide. The resultant corner kick was met by Liam McDevitt but his header was too high to trouble Gore.

Buchanan again went close soon after having latched onto a deflected clearance he tried to lob the ball over the stranded Gore but again his effort was wide of the target and United remained a goal adrift.

Just a minute later the visitors should really have doubled their advantage when a ball across the United area found Olumide Oluwatimilehin who despite a tight angle should have done better than drive the ball across the face of goal and out for a goal-kick beyond the far post.

We were now approaching the half hour mark as Roberts and Jack Williams combined on the left to feed the ball to Clark on the edge of the box, his shot struck a defender and went wide of the target. Within a minute at the other end Oluwatimilehin started a move by setting Roman Michael-Percil away on the left, he in turn fed Tanasheh Abrahams who picked out a charging Oluwatimilehin in the box but his header was held by Smith.

Wingate continued to push for a second in the final fifteen minutes of the half as United seemed to lack that spark that has been seen recently in the attacking department. In the 32nd minute a loose pass in midfield was picked off by Wingate’s Michael-Percil who in turn put Alan Fleming through on the United goal, the big striker blazing over when placing the shot may have been the better option, happily for United.

Six minutes from the break the visitors went even closer to getting a second. Luke Ifil collected an excellent cross-field pass, he helped it on first time to Michael-Percil who saw his early first time strike beat Smith only to come back across goal off the inside of the post, the ball being returned back to the same player who this time saw his strike blocked wide off the head of Keano Robinson. The resultant corner dropped to Rifat, Smith pushing his shot wide before the United ‘keeper claimed the subsequent corner to ease the pressure and the half closed off with United a goal adrift.

Much as he had on Saturday the gaffer made an immediate change at the break with Roberts being replaced by Joe Grant.

This change was to prove key just two minutes into the half as the United substitute cut across the pitch from right to left before firing in a cross-come shot that took a deflection off Sean Grace and looped up leaving his own ‘keeper stranded to pull United level.

Neither side looked anything like getting a winner after this and only a solitary shot from Michael-Percil that was inches wide hit the notebook until the 80th minute. At this point it was the visitors who went close to breaking the deadlock as substitutes Charlie Ruff and Eoin McKeown combined into the United box, the latter seeing his drive pushed away by Smith prior to being cleared by the defence.

This was shortly followed by Smith being called into action again when Oluwatimilehin received the ball on the right hand corner of the box, his drive being well tipped over by the United stopper.

The final minute of the ninety saw chances come and go for both Rowe and Jalloh and as we moved into stoppage time Jalloh’s dancing feet around three defenders set up a shooting chance for Grant but his effort screwed wide of the target and to all intents and purposes it looked like extra time was coming.

Not so however as in the fourth minute of added time United earned a corner, Toby Little's kick being met with perfect timing by McDevitt who planted his header just inside the post with Gore stranded and it is United who move forwards to a home tie against a new opponent in Soham Town Rangers.
