Hayes & Yeading's pre-season preparations continued as Paul Hughes' ten men earned a late win against Windsor at Stag Meadow on Saturday following the controversial 55th minute dismissal of trialist 'keeper Garry Malone.
A mixture of familiar faces and trialists took to the field for United and the first opening of the game fell to one of the Trialists, Jonathan Hippolyte, in just the second minute when he collected a ball down the left side by Toby Little, the striker playing the ball beyond the on-coming Hugo Sobte but also narrowly wide of the far post.
A minute later what seemed to be a coming together of two players just inside the United box saw the first controversial moment of the game as the referee, to the amazement of Uniteds players and bench, pointed to the spot. Jamie Di Giuseppe stepped up and crashed his kick against the crossbar and despite the ball hitting the ground and coming back into play, the assistant referee deemed the ball had crossed the line and the hosts were ahead.
Two minutes later another ball forwards to Hippolyte saw him beat Sobte to the ball again, this time lofting it over the advancing 'keeper only for a well positioned defender to clear the danger before the ball reached the net.
United were now dominating proceedings, Little found James Clark on the edge of the Windsor box, his clever run away from the defender set up a shooting chance but Sobte was equal to the effort. Just before the half hour mark United did level though, once again through the trusty boot of Toby Little. The United wing-back collected the ball on the left side and
manoeuvred
inside before curling a shot from the edge of the box with the outside of his boot beyond Sobte into the far corner.
The half closed out without further incident and the teams went in level at 1-1.
A mass of United substitutions came at the break and a second goal almost came threee minutes in when a Little free-kick picked out Mitchal Gough at the far post, his header back across goal just missing the target.
A minute later United were almost gifted a second when a Windsor defender played a back-pass straight to Clark who was through on goal only to be denied by a fine Sobte block with the home defence scrambling the ball to safety.
Ten minutes in to the half United's bench were inflamed once again as controversy reigned once more when trialist 'keeper Garry Malone appeared to collect a headed back-pass right on the line of the box, the assistant flagged that he was outside and despite it being a friendly and not a clear goalscoring opportunity the referee chose to brandish a straight red card leaving United with ten men and defender Matt Hall taking over in goal.
Despite being a man light, United continued to control proceedings. Little crossed to Clark but his header was inches away from giving United the lead and this was quickly followed by another Little cross that this time found Kunle Otudeko but his effort was sliced off target.
Sobte then did well to block away an effort from Tobi Adaje after he had shown quick feet making space for a shot inside the box before another moment of controversy saw a Little free-kick from near the corner flag being punched into the air by Sobte, Michael O'Neil rose highest and appeared to have headed United in front only for a defender to clear the ball, that looked well over the line, this time the assistant however ruled "no goal".
Two minutes later though United got their deserved winner when Troy Timothy robbed Dean Qevani 35 yards from goal, the recent United signing advancing to the edge of the box before placing a perfect curling shot beyond Sobte into the corner of the Windsor net.
Two minutes from time Hall showed that not only can he play as a defender, he's not a bad 'keeper either, the United man getting down sharply to his left to get a strong hand to a deflected Augustinus Monyvydas shot and United ran out deserved winners at the final whistle.
