Hayes & Yeading United edged into the next round of this seasons Emirates FA Cup with an extra time replay victory over a stubborn AFC Dunstable side at the SKYex on Tuesday evening.

After a quiet opening, the visitors had the first shot in anger on 10 minutes when a ball over the United defence dropped nicely to Josh Crawley, although he controlled the ball well his 20 yard drive was just too high to trouble Jack Smith in the United goal.

United went just as close five minutes later as Omar Rowe found Lyle Della-Verde in the Dunstable area, he slipped the ball left to Toby Little but as with Crawley earlier, his effort failed to trouble the ‘keeper. Della-Verde and Rowe combined again minutes later with the latter hitting a low shot from just outside the area that Dan Green got down well to hold.

Minutes later the deadlock was broken with a historic goal that saw Toby Little eclipse Josh Scott’s Hayes & Yeading all-time goalscoring record. Little collected a fine cross-field pass from Rowe and exchanged passes with Della-Verde before firing past Green to give United a deserved lead.

Shortly after Green denied Little a second before United nearly committed hari-kari at the back as a strongly hit back-pass was cleared by Smith but only as far as Crawley who despite controlling the ball could only fire weakly straight back to the grateful United stopper.

Five minutes from the break Smith made another vital contribution as Crawley burst through the United defence, his shot being well blocked away by the United ‘keepers outstretched boot.

Before the half closed out United twice went close to doubling the lead, Rowe and Keano Robinson combined with the latter firing just the wrong side of the upright and a minute later Dylan Switters danced his way through a number of challenges on the edge of the area before setting up Della-Verde who saw his shot pushed around the post by Green. The resultant corner was met by a diving Rowe but his header was cleared away by a combination of defender on the line and post and the game closed at the halfway point with United a goal to the good.

The second half was to be a more even affair as the visitors started to bring the ball down and pass it which showed that they do have quality in their side and I would not bet against them challenging for promotion this season. Just a few minutes after the re-start, Newman Carney sent Crawley through on goal once again, the striker being foiled once again by Smith’s outstretched boot.

United went close just before the hour mark when Elliot Benyon brought the ball down on his chest before setting up a shooting chance for Della-Verde, the shot swinging agonisingly wide of the target.

Despite the visitors having more of the ball in the second half, the United defence was certainly in control of most of what was thrown at them. On 70 minutes Rowe headed clear before racing around his opponent to collect his own header, having advanced into the Dunstable half he played the ball right to Benyon who laid it off to Della-Verde, again his shot from the edge of the box was just off target to the right of the post.

Little and Rowe combined soon after with the latter trying to beat Green with the outside of his boot only to fire over while at the other end a long ball was flicked on to Nathan Frater who fired goalwards only to be denied by Smith who did well to push his shot away with the United defence tidying up to prevent further danger.

With five minutes remaining United again went close to a second. Montserrat international Dean Mason, making his United debut from the bench, collected the ball 25 yards out and hit a rasping drive that Green managed to fumble around the post. The resultant corner was met by Liam McDevitt who saw his header cleared off the line and when the ball came back to him he could not keep his shot down and we stayed at 1-0.

With victory almost seemingly sealed, United were hit with a real sucker punch in the third and final minute of stoppage time as a long ball over the United defence saw BJ Christie hold off a challenge before sliding the ball past Smith to level for the visitors and therefore force extra time.

So into an extra half hour we go. First to be tested was Green, Robinson fired the ball cross-field from right to left picking out Little. He played the ball inside to substitute Ogo Obi who saw his well directed shot held by Green. Minutes later another fine ball from one side to the other saw Switters pick out Little who slipped inside of his marker before firing inches wide of the target.

The only other noteworthy effort of the first additional period saw Obi feed Jacob Cook, the Wealdstone loanee just missing the angle of post and bar from fully 25 yards.

With legs getting tired and penalties no doubt on everybody’s mind, United nudged in front with seven minutes remaining as Obi collected a double flick on in the Dunstable area before forcing a shot past Green to put United 2-1 ahead.

The only other real chance of the half came in stoppage time as Obi ran through tackles into the visitors area, his shot was blocked out by Green but only as far as Benyon who fired over but United had done enough to earn a trip to Haywards Heath this coming Saturday.
