A highly entertaining local derby was eventually won by Northwood after Hayes and Yeading United’s under 18 side had done so well to recover from conceding two early goals.

The first chance of the game produced the first goal as a quick ball out of defence put Fem Azeez in behind the defence on the left flank and he got a low centre in to put it on a plate for the fast arriving Stanley Anum to apply a simple finish. They almost doubled their lead 5 minutes later when Anum cut the ball back from near the right hand corner flag and Azeez cannoned a 25 yard shot against the left upright.

After, Anum’s low shot was saved by a diving Alex Ravenhill, Northwood doubled their lead on the quarter hour mark, Azeez finishing with a lob after racing onto a long throughball and beating the offside trap.

After this early double setback, United then settled into more of a rhythm and the game became more of an even contest. Jake Sobalak was denied when in front of goal by a last ditch challenge that took the sting off his shot and Elijah Manning, whose pace was causing the home side lots of problems, cut the ball back from the right hand channel and Nicolas Hounto made room before trying a precise shot which home keeper Sonny Wheeler did very well to save.

This improvement got its reward on 32 minutes. Sobalak touched the ball past his opponent on the right hand side and got round him before picking out Manning in the middle who tapped in from 6 yards. Minutes later, Sobalak was again involved, squaring the ball for Matthew Achuba whose quick feet got him the room for a shot but Wheeler produced another superb save.

United continued to press for an equaliser, and two minutes before half time, it came with a very quick break down the right by Simeon Olarein, who somehow squeezed his shot inside the far post from a seemingly impossible angle.

United were quick on the offensive after the break and after Manning got in behind the defence and had his shot blocked by Wheeler’s legs, substitute Harvey Killeen followed up with a shot which clipped the bar on its way over. The same player was inches wide with a direct free kick on 52 minutes and a minute later, Sobalak’s low centre was fired just wide by Moustafa Ahmadi from the edge of the area.

Ravenhill showed good focus to pull off a fine save at his near post after a long period without being involved, beating away Jay Mateta’s powerful shot. Moments later, Killeen was threatening at the other end and his goal bound shot was deflected wide by Ben Defaux.

In the last 15 minutes the game opened up again. On a quick break from a United corner, Azeez found Anum at the far post and his shot came back off the cross bar. Then at the other end, United hit the bar twice in quick succession, first through Killeen’s shot from the edge of the area and then from Roper’s looping header. However, with ten minutes left on the clock, Anum turned in Mateta’s low centre at the back post to put his side back into the lead.

Sobalak twice went close to finding another equaliser in the closing stages, first being denied by a last ditch tackle and then curling a 15 yard shot wide of the far post. In stoppage time Northwood captain Brendan McKenna was sent off for a second bookable offence, a tackle that might have brought a straight red on Sobalak and one that provoked quite a melee. However, the dust settled and Northwood hung on for the three points.
