Hendon 1

Hayes & Yeading’s new look under 18 side, under the guidance of Richard Bell, stepped out for the first time on to the SKYex pitch on Wednesday evening and followed up their opening game win at Staines with a fine 5-1 victory over Hendon in the Bostik Youth League.

After a cagey opening fifteen minutes with both sides sizing each other up, United went close when Harvey Killeen hit a 25 yard drive that only just cleared the Greens crossbar.

The lead for the home side came minutes later. The ball was played forwards from the middle of the park to Mustafa Ahmadi who cushioned the ball to Haaris Hussain who fired past Hendon ‘keeper Daniel Purdue from 12 yards.

Within three minutes the visitors came within a whisker of pulling level as George Raptis broke down the left, his deep cross found Kaci Henry who beat United stopper Alex Ravenhill only for the ball to cannon back off the post to former United man Malachy McGovern, the midfielder blasting over from the edge of the box.

Next it was United’s turn to hit the woodwork as Purdue got his fingertips to a dipping drive by Ahmadi with the effort going over off the Hendon bar.

Ravenhill was soon in action again for United, a corner from the visitors being headed back into the mix by William Murphy, Ravenhill got a part punch to the ball but was alert enough to get down to block out McGovern’s effort and the danger was cleared.

Henry then hit a fierce goalbound drive that United skipper Jack Roper did extremely well to get his head to and within a minute at the other end Jay O’Connell went close, forcing a good save from Purdue with an angled drive.

As the half neared its conclusion both Killeen and O’Connell flashed shots just wide of the Greens goal and United had to settle for a one goal lead at the break.

Early in the second period Hendon had a golden chance to pull level when a free-kick from midway was played in to the United box, the ball dropping nicely for Riccardo Alexander-Greenaway but the defender Blaized over when well placed to trouble Ravenhill.

Within a minute of arriving off the bench, United’s Josh Blaize had already made an impression, his forceful run up the right side saw him centre the ball to O’Connell who took the ball first time and beat the dive of Purdue to double United’s lead.

Hendon struck the woodwork again on 64 minutes when a Montell Asare-Bediako shot went wide off the angle of the United goal and then with 14 minutes remaining United struck again. Purdue’s goal-kick was swiftly returned to the danger area on the volley, O’Connell collected with a single touch before turning the ball past Purdue.

Henry then had an angled drive that was deflected wide by a well time interception from United defender Shkelqim Sadiku and soon after a four on one break by United saw the ball fed to Killeen who beat Purdue only for the ball to come back off the inside of the upright to safety.

Seconds later though United had number four. Blaize latched on to a neat throughball, his effort was blocked out by Purdue only for Killeen to collect and roll the ball home from the edge of the box.

Number five came within a couple of minutes, Sadiku ran the ball out of defence to the middle of the park and found Killeen, he in turn held off a challenge and fed O’Connell who also beat his marker before completing his hat-trick.

The only real downer on the United performance came a minute from time when a lapse of concentration at the back saw the impressive Murphy run at the United defence on the right, his low centre being forced home at the far post by the arriving Raptis, but still a good nights work for United’s future stars.
