Much as the senior side had a few days earlier, United’s under 18 side departed the FA’s premier competition on Wednesday evening, losing by the odd goal in five in the FA Youth Cup to a big and strong Enfield Town side at the SKYex.

After the visitors had a bit of early possession with little danger being posed to the United goal, it was the home side who started to create openings. Jake Sobalak collected a pass from Mustafa Ahmadi only to see his effort blocked away by Enfield ‘keeper Badr Baraoumi and within a minute Sobalak was on the ball again, this time on the right where he fed Nicolas Hounto, the striker’s shot from an angle finding the side netting.

Baraoumi again saved from Solabak and just a minute later United were hit with a sucker punch as the Enfield left winger, no name quoted on the teamsheet, broke away after Shkelqim Sadiku had lost his footing, before pulling the ball back neatly to left-back Necati Gench who swept the ball past the dive of Alex Ravenhill to give the visitors the lead against the run of play.

United picked themselves up and started to push on again looking to level the tie as Baraoumi was again required, firstly getting down sharply to deny Hounto before going full stretch to tip away a Sobalak drive from 20 yards.

In the same way as happened earlier, United got caught out again, this time a hopeful punt forwards saw Sadiku outmuscled by Raheem Shaika just inside the United box, the big Enfield striker smashing the ball past Ravenhill giving the United stopper no chance.

With United already deprived of their two top scorers by injury, disaster struck again at the end of the first period when Hounto went down under a challenge injuring his shoulder which led to his departure from the pitch by stretcher, we wish him a speedy return to action.

The visitors could and maybe should have had a third early in the second half as Shaika gained possession in the United box only to shoot straight at a grateful Ravenhill who held well.

With the visitors sitting back a little on their lead and United pushing up-field it was little surprise that a glut of chances came for the home side, sadly they were not hitting the target.

Ahmadi fired in a free-kick that skipper Jack Roper got his head to but could keep down before a neat move started by Ahmadi saw the ball switched between Josh Blaize and Elijah Manning, the latter’s shot being held by Baraoumi.

Manning fired wide soon after from an Ahmadi centre and then Ahmadi himself forced another save from Baraoumi who dived full stretch to tip his effort away.

And we arrived at 10 minutes of stoppage time, a combination of substitutions, injuries and time wasting, which was to spawn three more goals.

As we entered stoppage time, Roper made a challenge on the left side just outside the United penalty area only for referee Mr Bougouizi, who was way behind play, to point to the spot much to the chagrin of the United skipper. Gench stepped up and just beat Ravenhill’s dive.

Most teams would have given up at this point but United’s youngsters seem to have a bit of fight in them as three minutes later they earned a penalty of their own which was duly converted by Lugnius Zalpys.

Just two minutes later United were back in with a shot as substitute Ameer Soliman rose highest to power home a header from a right wing cross.

It was almost an amazing recovery in the ninth minute of added time when Zalpys’s cross from the right fell nicely to centre-back Kaine Nelson who despite having his back to goal fired in an acrobatic overhead kick that sadly went straight at Baraoumi who held on gratefully and it was Enfield Town who progressed to the next round.
