Hayes & Yeading came into this local derby looking to not only build on a superb 1-0 win at League leaders AFC Rushden & Diamonds on Tuesday but to avenge the 3-0 reverse at Honeycroft earlier in the campaign.

Paul made two changes this time around with Toby Little coming back from the bench to replace the injured Keano Robinson while Sahr Kabba was preferred in attack to Ismael Ehui who dropped to the bench. Joining Ish on the bench were new signing from Kings Langley Emmanuel Folarin and the returning Duncan Culley, these were joined by Ola Olajubu and Michael O’Neil.

The visiting Reds, playing in blue for obvious reasons, came close to an opener within 90 seconds of the kick-off as a corner from the right side was met by a glancing header by Luke Maguire that beat Zaki Oualah only to be headed off the line by a well positioned defender.

From that point on United pretty much took the game by the scruff of the neck. Scott Donnelly twice went close with free-kicks from 20 odd yards and in between these efforts, Adam Cash played the ball across the park to Toby Little who advanced before driving the ball goalwards only for Harry Tucker to get in an excellent block to keep his skipper Paul McCarthy in the Reds goal out of the action.

The game really turned in United’s favour on 19 minutes when a Tommy Smith header was brilliantly saved on the goal line, unfortunately for Uxbridge’s Rhys Rabess he is not the goalkeeper which left referee Tom Ellsmore with no option but to award United a penalty and dismiss the offending player. Manny Duku stepped up and from twelve yards bagged number 32 of the campaign by sending McCarthy the wrong way.

Duku nearly had another a few minutes later as he latched onto another Cash centre, this time McCarthy getting down well to block his effort wide of the target. Just past the half hour mark a neat interchange of passes between Donnelly, Toby Little and Sahr Kabba saw the later move inside onto his right before driving the ball towards the near post, Tucker just getting enough on the shot to deflect it wide.

Just before the break Laste Dombaxe went close from distance after a fine build up move involving himself, Spyros Mentis and Donnelly and then as the half closed out United should have had another as Duku met a Cash centre but headed wide. Sadly in crossing the ball the United defender sustained an injury that saw him leave the field at the break on a stretcher, his replacement at the re-start seeing a debut for Emmanuel Folarin.

United started the second half a man to the good and still very much in the ascendancy and within minutes of the re-start McCarthy was needed to keep his side just a single goal behind as he pushed out a diving header as Tommy Smith met a Dombaxe centre.

Just after the hour mark Paul Hughes sent the fit again Duncan Culley back into the United attack in place of Kabba and he almost scored with his first touch, Dombaxe sent the ball left to Duku, his low centre finding his returning strike partner who under pressure from Dave Thomas slotted the ball wide.

Five minutes later though Culley was indeed back on the team sheet with the build up almost mimicking the previous one, this time it was Mentis who fired the ball wide to Duku, again United’s top scorer picked out his strike partner in the middle, this time Culley forced the ball past McCarthy from close range.

Culley again went close two minutes later before a reversal of roles saw United nab number three. Culley collected the ball on the left side of the box and crossed into the middle where an unmarked Duku thumped a header past McCarthy to effectively seal the points and pull himself level as the divisions joint top scorer.

A double save from McCarthy shortly after denied both Little and Dombaxe in quick succession before a mazy run from Mentis again worked the Uxbridge stopper who pushed his drive away to safety.

He was finally to be beaten a fourth time with five minutes remaining as Dombaxe took a quick throw-in on the right side to Folarin, the United debutant returning the ball quickly to Dombaxe who moved across the pitch before unleashing a left foot drive that flew past McCarthy, struck the underside of the bar before bouncing up into the net.

And that was it, a comfortable 4-0 victory for United against an Uxbridge side who rarely threatened the United goal although playing 71 minutes with 10 men would have taken its toll on most teams but a win is a win as United still continue to push towards the automatic promotion places.
