Paul Hughes’ Hayes & Yeading side immediately bounced back to form on Saturday, coming back from the seaside with a deserved 5-2 victory over early season pace setters Moneyfields courtesy of a Duncan Culley hat-trick and another two from top scorer Manny Duku.

The gaffer made three changes to the starting line-up that went down to AFC Dunstable a week previous, Ryan Kinnane replaced the injured Priestly Farquharson at the back with Spyros Mentis and Duncan Culley being preferred to Laste Dombaxe and Ismael Ehui who both dropped to the bench showing how strong the current United squad is.

On a very heavy pitch and with rain still coming down, United were off at speed, just like the trains passing behind the goal the home side were defending in the first half, proper non-league!

In fact it took United, and Culley, just five minutes to bag a brace. The first came in just the second minute as Toby Little got away on the left, his centre seeing Culley rise to head goalwards, with ‘keeper Stephen Mowthorpe rooted in no mans’ land, the ball sailed into the unguarded Moneyfields net.

Culley and United’s second was just a couple of minutes away and came via the exact same route. Little outpaced Curtis Thorn on the left wing, his cross being met powerfully by Culley who ended up in the net with the ball much to the appreciation of the United faithful behind the goal (pictured above right).

The home side did then start to stir, a free-kick played in from the left was partially cleared as far as Moneys skipper Steve Hutchins, his volley being blocked wide by a timely Keano Robinson interception with the corner being easily dealt with by Danny Boness in the United goal.

Boness unfortunately could do very little to prevent the home side pulling a goal back shortly afterwards as a right side cross was diverted past his own United ‘keeper by Ryan Kinnane in his attempt to cut out the cross.

As seems to be the way with this United squad, heads were up instantly and they pushed ahead looked for a third. Culley set up a shooting chance for Scott Donnelly that drew a good diving save from Mowthorpe and then just before the half hour mark skipper Tom Smith got his head to an Adam Cash free-kick, the ball dropping just the wrong side of the upright.

More chances came and went for the visitors who were at this point controlling the game. Spyros Mentis and Donnelly combined to set up a chance for Manny Duku but his angled drive was deflected wide of the far post with Mowthorpe stranded and then Culley was inches away from a second United hat-trick as his shot on the turn missed the goal by a fraction.

From all this pressure, United were nearly caught out at the back as Thorn played the ball through to Ryan Pennery who ran at the United goal only to be denied by the sharpness of Boness who was quickly off his line to block the effort and grab the loose ball on the edge of his area.

Another chance came the way of the Moneys five minutes from the interval as Brett Poate played a free-kick into the United box, Hutchins lofted the ball over Boness only for a well positioned Cash to volley the ball off the line before Boness again did well to hold a low drive, this time from the edge of the box by Marley Ridge.

Then with just a minute to go to the interval, United struck for a third time. This time Culley was the creator rather than goalscorer, the United striker chipping an excellent ball across from the left bye-line, the ball sailing over Mowthorpe to Duku who was able to chest the ball home from a yard at the far post and United went in at the break two goals to the good (pictured right).

Once again after the break United was out of the starting blocks quicker, although this time it did take 12 minutes rather than 5 to find the net twice. Keano Robinson had already seen a header from yet another Little cross being fielded by Mowthorpe who had also denied Culley by pushing his shot wide.

Then on 54 minutes the Moneys gifted United a fourth, and Culley a hat-trick. Donnelly fired the ball forwards to Culley and despite a loud shout of “Keepers” from Mowthorpe, Poate tried to head the ball back only for it to bypass the Moneys ‘keeper which left Culley with the easiest tap-in to an empty net thus completing his hat-trick.

Just three minutes later United had a fifth as Duku rose highest to head home a Donnelly cross, again from the left side as United continued to exploit the home sides’ weakness in that area.

With a four goal advantage, it was maybe not totally surprising that United took their foot off the pedal a little and the home side started to gain some forwards momentum with little or no result until stoppage time.

Two Moneys substitutes combined on 72 minutes with Howard Neighbour finding Joe Briggs who fired wide from 8 yards and then Boness did well to push away a Hutchins volley from the edge of the box. United were not without chances though in the latter stages, the best falling to Donnelly who saw his first time effort from a Cash centre being pushed away by a diving Mowthorpe.

Shots from Briggs and Jake Raine were held by Boness before a Moneys player finally got his name on the scoresheet deep into stoppage time as Sam Pearce stole in at the far post to smash a corner into the United net from close range but it was United’s day from start to finish as a very busy month of February moves on with a first three points.
