Hayes & Yeading progressed to the semi-final stage of the BFB Challenge Cup, beating Marlow by the odd goal in eleven at the SKYex on a freezing cold Tuesday evening.

United’s Danny Boness was the first keeper drawn into action in the ninth minute as Lee Barney found space on the left just inside the United box, the United stopper holding a low drive.

Within a minute though United went even closer as Scott Donnelly crossed to Duncan Culley, the United strikers header being tipped wide by Simon Grant in the Marlow goal. Two minutes later the deadlock was broken, Culley set up a shooting chance for the returning Danny May, Grant spilled his shot and Spyros Mentis was on hand to fire home.

Culley and May almost repeated the act a few minutes later but this time Grant held on although just a minute later he could do nothing to deny United a second. Ismael Ehui sent Adam Cash away up the right flank, the United wing-back pulling the ball ball perfectly to Laste Dombaxe who fired home his first United goal from 15 yards.

The visitors created a half chance in the 23rd minute as Harry Laflin picked out Kelvin Bossman in the six yard box, the former United striker tried a cheeky back-heel that Boness managed to block wide from close range.

Fabian Etienne cleared a Culley effort away off the line before United struck a third on 37 minutes in very similar fashion to goal number 2. This time the pass that sent Cash away came from substitute and current United under 18 skipper Jack Roper, Cash slipped past Etienne at pace and again picked out Dombaxe who duly obliged with his second of the game from a similar distance to his first.

Deep into first half stoppage time Jordace Holder-Spooner burst into the United area from the left side, his shot going well wide of the target and the half closed out with United three to the good.

Marlow took five minutes of the second half to get themselves back in the game however the first chance fell to Roper, the 17 year-old just missing the top corner from 25 yards. This was closely followed by Boness pushing over a 20 yard drive from Laflin.

A minute later Boness was finally beaten, Allen Bossman found space on the right before picking out Kameron English who stole in at the far post to tap home.

Just two minutes later however, United had a fourth as Ehui fed the ball to Roper, he in turn slid the ball neatly through to Donnelly who slotted the ball beyond Grant’s dive.

Three minutes later United had five. Dombaxe feeding Culley who controlled the pass and fired past Grant
(above left).

After a 15 minute breather for both sides, we entered a final period of 15 minutes that saw the ball in the net no fewer than five times as United raced ahead only to almost be pegged back in the dying embers by a Marlow side that just kept on pushing.

Grant twice kept United to five by pushing out efforts from Roper and Donnelly before the visitors struck a second on 77 minutes as Keano Robinson was dispossessed by Curtis Chapple who headed for the bye-line before picking out English for a second close range finish.

Once again however it took United just two minutes to re-extend their lead, this time Culley was tripped just inside the box and referee Ellsmore pointed to the spot. Culley dusted himself off and coolly sent Grant the wrong way from 12 yards.

A final ten minutes however saw United get somewhat ragged at the back as Marlow stole in to score three more times. English was the first, netting his third of the evening on 81 minutes, again a close range finish from a Chapple centre.

Next up it was English who turned creator by beating May on the left side before firing across to Chris Ovenden who also netted from close range.

Number five for the visitors came a minute into stoppage time as a second penalty of the game was awarded, this time for a trip on Barney by Ola Olajubu. As with United’s penalty, the fouled player stepped up and struck the ball home comfortably.

A minute later United could have had another goal or another penalty but walked away with neither. Ehui raced onto a nice throughball, Grant did well to block his shot out and as Roper looked to reach the loose ball he appeared to be tripped but the appeals were waved away and the game was brought to a conclusion soon after.

For those of you that lost track though all the above, it finished 6-5 and United’s defence of the trophy moves to the semi-final stage.
