A Manny Duku hat-trick was the highlight of a stunning demolition job of high flying Hartley Wintney as United ran out 6-1 winners in Hampshire on Tuesday evening.

The hosts started on the offensive with a forceful run from midfield by Paul Hodges, including a one-two, culminating in a shot from the edge of the area which Jack Smith dived to his left to save. United responded with Manny Duku releasing Ismael Ehui behind the defence but his rising shot was helped over by home 'keeper Craig Atkinson.

Soon afterwards, Danny Hutchins won a header from a Hartley Wintney throw-in and suddenly Duku was sprinting clear however his shot, despite beating Atkinson, came back off the base of the far post. This sparked a period of United dominance in which Rohdell Gordon hit a shot over from the right channel after weaving his way into the area, and then Andrew Ofosu was denied from a similar position by Atkinson’s trailing leg.

Hartley Wintney responded and again it was Hodges denied by Smith diving low to his left after a well worked short corner routine. Play soon swept back to the other end with Toby Little drilling a low 25 yard shot goalwards which Atkinson saved low to his left.

On 25 minutes, United took a deserved lead in somewhat fortuitous circumstances as Ofosu crossed from the right and Little got the slightest of touches to glance the ball past Atkinson and the ball continued on its way into the net. Smith then prevented an immediate response with a fine save to parry from former United man Adam Everiss’s fierce shot.

Just five minutes after going behind, Hartley Wintney equalised from the penalty spot after a Keano Robinson foul in the area. Captain Dean Stow took the responsibility and scored with a well placed shot to Smith’s right.

United’s reaction was impressive and after Little was curiously booked for not taking a corner quickly enough, he planted the ball on Duku’s head at the back post and he powered it in from virtually under the bar.

The half ended on a comical note with Atkinson having to scramble back to prevent an own goal from Liam Eagle’s overhit backpass, just managing to touch it away off the line.

Early on the second half, Hodges seized upon a wayward Robinson header but Smith was again equal to his shot. After a relative lull in the game which saw both teams misplacing passes, a moment of quality on 62 minutes led to a third for United. Duku battled to nip in the front of Liam Eagle and he then despatched his shot into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

Just four minutes later , Duku’s battling qualities came to the fore again as he robbed Louie Paget on the left wing and weaved his way into the box, and courtesy of a deceptive change of pace, he was tripped for a penalty. He tried to claim the chance of a hat-trick but Danny Hutchins pulled rank and blasted the ball into the top right corner.

For much of the remainder of the match, United were able to nullify any threat of a comeback although Everiss’s shot almost turned into the perfect throughball for Jake Baxter but it was out of his reach and Smith was able to gather it in.

On 86 minutes, Duku was able to claim the hat-trick he deserved with another shot from outside the area which deflected into the corner beyond Atkinson. The scoring was completed with another long range effort, this time by Ofosu who found the corner with a looping half-volley to cap a fine performance by Paul Hughes's side.
