A Hanwell equaliser deep into stoppage time saw the visitors take away a point from a rain soaked SKYex and in doing so deny Hayes & Yeading the chance to top the table with just a few weeks of the season remaining.

Manager Paul Hughes, in a very rare Hayes & Yeading moment, named the exact same 16 that had romped to victory at Fleet Town on Saturday, again opting for a flat back four over the more usual three central defenders.

United were caught napping in just the second minute as Priestly Farquharson was dispossessed by Charlie Mitchell on the United left side, the wide man’s low centre being slid out by Tom Smith at the near post to avert the danger.

Minutes later United were in full flow going forwards as an interchange of passes between Toby Little, Manny Duku and Spyros Mentis created an opening for Scott Donnelly who saw his shot from just inside the box brilliantly tipped onto the bar by Hanwell stopper Sam Bunting with the ball continuing out for a corner that was to come to nothing.

Zaki Oualah in the United goal comfortably fielded a Dan Fleming shot from range before an almighty mix up at the other end almost saw Hanwell put United ahead, a low skidding back-pass catching Bunting wrong footed, the ‘keeper managing to chase down the ball and claw it out from on the goalline before Duncan Culley’s follow-up was also blocked out.

United continued to push for the opener, a quick throw-in found Duku who chested the ball to his strike partner Duncan Culley, Saturday’s hat-trick hero seeing his angled drive go over off the top of Bunting’s crossbar. Just a few minutes later another chance for United saw Little feed the ball in from the left to Duku, the United top scorer controlling the ball and getting his shot away only for it to be blocked out by a well timed Oliver Duffy interception.

Then just after the half hour mark, the visitors struck gold and fired themselves ahead. Mitchell held possession on the right flank before weaving his way past Farquharson, his centre picking out the unmarked Fleming who kept his nerve to head home giving Oualah no chance.

United were a little flat after going behind and didn’t really create much until two minutes from the break when Laste Dombaxe won possession in the middle of the park and found Culley, he drew the last defender to him before slipping the ball to Duku who with time blazed the ball over from just inside the Hanwell area which left United a goal adrift at the break.

United made a half time change with Keano Robinson replacing Ryan Kinnane but the half itself took a while to get going and the first real opening came on the hour mark as Donnelly played a free-kick into the middle of the Hanwell box, Bunting came flying out and totally missed his punch with the ball dropping to Dombaxe he got a shot away but the visiting defenders threw their bodies in the way and the ball was scrambled away to safety.

Four minutes later United were level. Substitute Jack Roper who had been on the pitch a matter of seconds collected the ball in midfield and fed it forwards to Culley, he again slid the ball to Duku who this time made no mistake firing low past Bunting’s dive into the far corner of the Hanwell net.

Now level, United started looking for another quick strike to push ahead. Duku collected the ball wide on the left and despite being forced wide he still managed a shot from a tight angle that Bunting tipped onto the bar, it was collected by Donnelly as the defence attempted to clear and put back in the mix only to again be scrambled away to safety.

Shortly after, another low Little cross from the left saw Culley try to back-heel the ball goalwards only for Bunting to block and the impressive Luke Alfano to clear the danger.

As time closed on the game, a run from his own area by Mitchell saw him push the United defence back before seeing his shot saved by Oualah he immediately set United on the front foot by finding Culley on the left, he beat his man and tried to cross to Duku, his effort looked to be snubbed out only for the ball to fall to Sahr Kabba who fed Duku who in turn span past his marker and cracked the ball into the top corner to briefly put United ahead and “top of the table”.

Sadly it was not to be for United as firstly Mitchell was only inches from meeting a Mergim Qarri chip over the United defence and then in stoppage time, Qarri, who had started the season with United before storming off at Marlow having been subbed, collected the ball and advanced before firing an inch perfect drive from fully 20 yards that flew beyond Oualah’s hands and into the far corner to save a point for his side and knock United back down to second in the promotion race.
