Despite officially being the away team, United welcomed near neighbours and virtual namesakes AFC Hayes to Beaconsfield Road on Thursday evening as the two sides played out a quarter-final Middlesex Charity Cup tie on the clubs excellent 3G training pitch.
With United fielding a side in the main consisting of irregular squad members and under 18s, it was AFC who had the best of the early exchanges with United ‘keeper Luke Daley needing to push away a Dean McDonnell effort in just the first minute.
Attacks by AFC continued at pace with the main threat coming from the impressive George Isaac who top scored for our own under 18s in seasons 2009/10 and 2010/11. His first opening saw him run onto a Bilal Butt pass before being thwarted by Daley and a minute later he fired across goal and wide after good work out wide from Ollie Jones.
The eighth minute saw United’s first attacking threat as Jean-Paul Antwi collected a Danny May pass on the left, his deep centre being met on the volley at the far post by Kaan Fehmi who was denied by AFC stopper Cameron Kennedy who grabbed the ball at the second attempt.
United then lost 16 year-old Michael O’Neil to a head injury on fifteen minutes and obviously we wish him a speedy recovery having been sent to hospital as a precaution.
Daley then denied Isaac once again as the striker broke through with Fehmi again going close, this time from distance, ten minutes from the break after he was set up by Ismael Ehui’s clever touch.
Just before the break substitute Rashid Enayat tried his luck from 20 yards out, just clearing the crossbar and we went in scoreless at half-time.
The break saw a return to action in a United shirt for the first time in 7 years for assistant manager and former skipper Peter Holmes who replaced Antwi with the back four re-shaping for the second time since the game started following on from O’Neil’s injury.
The second half did not start well for United though as AFC struck twice in the opening ten minutes. First to strike was Butt who was able to tap home after Isaac had caught Daley in possession inside his box and then four minutes later, Isaac himself grabbed number two as he slid the ball past Daley’s dive and in off the post.
Two minutes after going two up it could have been three as Butt slotted the ball past Daley only for a well positioned May to clear the ball away from the six yard box.
Just after the hour mark United reduced the arrears, Enayat collected a pass in the left channel, he set up Ehui who smashed home his fifteenth of the campaign from just inside the box.
Bradley hand had a shot deflect wide off May shortly after and then another defensive mix up saw United play head tennis and fail to clear which allowed Butt to step in a fire home his second from the edge of the box.
Ehui for United and Tiernan Fitzgerald for AFC went close before Butt was a whisker away from a hat-trick, Isaac setting up the chance only for the ball to rebound back off the United post.
The arrears were reduced a minute from time as Holmes fired home from 20 yards with the aid of a deflection giving Kennedy no chance but it was AFC who progress to the semi-finals and we wish them well against Spelthorne Sports.
