At the third attempt this season, The Bob Lucas Stadium finally witnessed 90+ minutes of football with the final outcome a 2-2 draw after United saw a two-nil lead slip from their grasp.

It was United who applied the most pressure from the opening whistle winning an early corner but failing to test the Weymouth goalkeeper.

As the half wore on Cole Brown began getting notable success going forward, with his pace troubling the Weymouth defence but United struggled to make the most of the opportunities.

On 11 minutes Graeme Montgomery took a free kick just outside the top right hand top of the Weymouth penalty area. Met by a Tom Broadbent flick header, it led to Weymouth goalkeeper Tom McHale backpeddling to punch off line and clear.

Just two minutes later, Montgomery let fly with a shot from outside the box with the outside of his left foot but it whizzed just past the post.

United were dominant in possession and looking more positive in their determination than in recent games and it was midway through the first half before Weymouth got their first corner which was effectively dealt with by the visiting defence.

As the half wore on Montgomery and Cole were beginning to look too much for the Weymouth defenders who took to less legal means of stopping them earning a series of free kicks around the box for United. In the 23rd minute Montgomery hit one from the top right of the box hard into be wall but his follow up was dragged beyond the far post as Weymouth weathered the storm.

In the 25th minute United were given warning of their hosts’ ability when Weymouth’s Stuart Fleetwood beat the offside trap inside the right edge of the box and Danny Boness was forced into a smart save at his near post.

On 34 minutes a United corner from the right was flicked on near post by Callum Adebiyi and cleared off the line as it looked like it might not be their day. However on 36 minutes Montgomery again skipped away from Weymouth defenders before unleashing a low drive from the top of the box just right of central that ended low inside the post to give United a deserved lead.

At half-time the forecast rain arrived, coming down in tranches with some very heavy periods. That slowed the game down but on 50 minutes United were 2-0 ahead. Dylan Kearney feigned a run forward to lose his marker and met a ball from the left with his head from 6 yards out.

The goal seemed to wake the home side and moments later Charlie Davis hit a good free kick beyond the United far post.

Just after the hour mark, the increased home pressure finally told. A cross-field ball found Mark Cooper and he cut inside and shot right footed inside post to make it 1-2

Although United had waves of attacking play it always looked like Weymouth were most likely to score and on 73 minutes the sides were level. United failed to clear their lines and the ever-dangerous Fleetwood latched onto the loose ball at the far post and fired home.

t was United however who nearly stole all three pints in the 89th minute. Tom Broadbent’s free kick on the left side just outside the box had pace and direction and needed to be pushed over by a full stretch McHale.
