Hayes & Yeading United progressed to the Final of the Southern League Cup with a resounding 4-0 victory over Steve Claridge’s Salisbury at Holloways Park on Tuesday evening, the first team all season to stop the Whites from scoring.

United opened up with the same starting XI who had earned a point at Weymouth on Saturday however it was the visitors who started off on the front foot and could have taken the lead in just 40 seconds.

Justin Bennett broke in to the United box from the right side, his centre found Tommy Wright who was only denied by a last ditch block in front of goal by a United defender before the ball was cleared away.

The Whites continued to have good spells of possession without getting a real sight of the United goal before the deadlock was broken by the home side. Soloman Sambou fed the ball to Graeme Montgomery in the centre, his first time pass sent Anthony Edgar away on goal and he slid the ball inside the near post as Whites ‘keeper Alex Bass came out to meet him.

The visitors immediately started to push ahead looking for an equaliser. Tom Whelan had a shot blocked wide by Tom Broadbent before a Broadbent slip allowed Bennett a shooting chance but Danny Boness was equal to the effort gathering the low driven shot comfortably.

Eight minutes from the break a ball over the top saw Bennett race on despite looking to have been in an offside position, he entered the United area but was denied a shot by a superbly timed tackle by Jack Smith with Broadbent clearing the danger.

The half closed with Boness again handling a low shot comfortably, this time from Wright and United went in a goal to the good.

An enforced half-time reshuffle for United saw Ryan Hope, who had not recovered from a blow to the eye just before half-time, replaced by debutant right-back Karl Stevenson with Frankie Jones moving into his more established midfield role.

It was indeed United who came out firing on all cylinders and almost had another just 25 seconds after the re-start when Cole Brown sent Edgar through, the first half scorer again beat Bass but this time his effort came back off the face of the far post.

A neat move by the visitors involving Chris Onoufriou, Wright and Bennett saw the latter hit a dipping shot from 20 yards that just cleared the United goal before two United strikes in four minutes as good as settled the tie.

Brown collected the ball in the middle, he in turn found Edgar who with a single pass sent Sambou through, the midfielder keeping his composure under challenge to fire across Bass into the far corner.

Goal number three was far more spectacular as Graeme Montgomery picked off a poor Onoufriou pass, took a couple of paces forwards before smashing an unstoppable shot from 25 yards into the top corner of the Salisbury net.

Time moved on with the end result not really seeming in jeopardy, Onoufriou was too high from distance for the visitors while Bass did well to hold an angled Edgar drive from the corner of the box.

United almost had a fourth in the 81st minute, the hard working Dylan Kearney collected a cross field pass on the left, cut inside and fired a shot that Bass palmed away but only to Mahlondo Martin who saw his volley cleared off the line by the Whites defence.

A fine double save from Boness four minutes from time ensured a United clean sheet as firstly he diving right to push out a Bennett close range effort and then when the ball was played back over to Wright, the agile United stopper went in the opposite direction to push that effort away too before his defence cleared the danger.

A fourth for United came as the clock hit 90, Martin broke to the bye-line on the left, his centre looked to be providing a tap in for substitute Matt Sinclair only for Whites Adam Flint to get there first to head past his own ‘keeper.
