Hayes & Yeading’s woes continued on Saturday at Holloways Park when having lost two key men to first half injuries, the visitors from King’s Lynn nicked away all three points courtesy of a late Lee Stevenson strike.

United made three changes from Tuesday’s line-up as Ryan Hope, Callum Adebiyi and Frankie Jones came in for Melanious Mullarkey, Josh Christopher and Darren Locke, the latter two taking a place on the bench.

Top scorer Mitchell Weiss was first to test the ‘keeper in just the ninth minute when he received a deep corner, brought the ball under control and fired goalwards with visiting stopper Alex Street palming the ball away to safety.

Just a couple of minutes later the visitors went close themselves as United had the goal frame to thank when Shaun McWilliams hit a free kick from 22 yards that flew past the wall and Danny Boness’s fingertips before crashing back into play off the angle of post and bar before being cleared by the United defence.

The Linnets were soon back on the attack with only an excellent covering tackle from Jack Smith preventing Kurtis Revan from working Boness as the striker advanced into the United box.

The first of two blows struck United in the 22nd minute when the influential Connor Toomey had to leave the field with a leg injury, his replacement being Josh Chamberlain.

Minutes later saw blow number two as an Anthony Edgar free-kick was flicked on by Smith to Weiss at the far post, the strikers header hitting the challenging defender who also connected with the United man forcing him to leave the field and be taken to hospital with a nasty looking head injury, his replacement being young striker Dylan Kearney.

United were soon on the attack however as Edgar raced past the last covering defender before appearing to be sent sprawling to the ground by a trip only for referee Greaves to wave play on.

To be honest chances wise that was it for the first half as both sides looked a little blunt up front with defences very much on top.

United re-grouped from the injuries at the break and came out well at the start of the second half with a double chance to break the deadlock just four minutes in. Lewis Putman curled in a free-kick from the right that was met at the far post by Tom Broadbent, the United skipper’s header being pushed around the post by Street. The resultant corner kick was returned to Edgar who fed Putman, his deep cross again being met by Broadbent but this time he was wide of the target.

Street then held an Edgar effort after Kearney held the ball up well just outside the box before United rode their luck at the back with Soloman Sambou heading off the line twice in quick succession from Lee Stevenson and Toby Hilliard.

The Linnets did find the net on 84 minutes but the ball was adjudged to have crossed the bye-line in flight however they did fire the decisive blow just two minutes later in somewhat controversial circumstances. United were pushing forwards and Ryan Hope appeared to get to the ball first and nick it off a defender only to be penalised by referee Greaves. The free-kick quickly found its way to the other end of the pitch where Smith conceded a corner. Said corner was allowed to drop to Stevenson in the box and he in turn smashed the ball home from 12 yards giving Boness no chance.

The final few minutes saw nothing in the way of chances at either end and it was another bad day at the office results wise for Paul & Ritchie’s side.
