Hayes & Yeading gained a hard fought 3 points at Creasey Park on Saturday as second half strikes from midfielders David Hutton and Frankie Jones saw United stay in the survival race with 2 games remaining in what has been a torturous season.

On a dry pitch with a strong wind blowing from end to end, it was no surprise really that the first 45 minutes were a rather insipid affair with neither side showing the urgency to break the deadlock, albeit the visitors were safe for another season.

It was not until the 21st minute that a noteworthy effort came forth, Josh Chamberlain’s long throw from the left was flicked on to Anthony Edgar beyond the far post, his sweetly struck volley being superbly kept out by Dunstable ‘keeper Jack Smith.

Two minutes later our own Danny Boness was tested pretty much for the only time in the match when Claudio Diaz collected the ball in the middle of the park and advanced towards the United box before shooting low through a crowd, Boness getting down well to grab the ball at the foot of his post.

Ten minutes from the break United should have taken the lead, Chamberlain played a free-kick into the centre of the hosts area, Smith fumbled the ball under pressure and Tom Broadbent hooked the loose ball over the top from close range.

As the half came to a close, Mitchell Weiss won possession just outside the Dunstable area, his initial effort was blocked by a defender however the ball went back to the United striker who struck the ball perfectly on the half volley from 20 yards only for his effort to go inches wide of the upright.

Two half-time changes and a formation change were to prove perfect for United who looked a different side in the second half which we were to dominate. David Hutton and Karl Stevenson replaced Cole Brown and Jack Smith respectively as the gaffer switched to a back four to bolster the midfield which the home side were holding during the first period.

It took a while for United to get the vital breakthrough though which came just after the hour mark. Weiss sprinted away from Zack Reynolds on the left side, his low centre being touched home by Hutton who made a perfectly timed run to the far post.

Just three minutes later the same pair almost combined for a second. Sahr Kabba collected the ball on the left and sent Weiss away down the line, his low curling cross evading all and sundry in the middle with Hutton a whisker from grabbing his second.

United continued to push for another, Leo Donnellan moved forwards before feeding the ball to Frankie Jones who saw Smith off his line and tried a lofted lob from 25 yards that only just cleared the crossbar with Smith back peddling frantically.

Jones was not to be denied though and his hard working performance earned him a goal and United’s second on 73 minutes. Anthony Edgar brought the ball under control on the edge of the hosts box before setting up Jones who saw his initial effort well blocked by Smith who could do nothing as the United man rolled home the rebound.

The home sides’ only real chance of the second period came five minutes from time when two of their substitutes combined with Jetmir Esso picking out Jack Green eight yards from goal and he screwed his effort well wide of Boness’s post and United took all three points and live to fight another day despite results elsewhere not being favourable.
