Hayes & Yeading tasted defeat in the League for the first time in four games in a match that took over 3 hours to complete after a serious looking head injury to Dorchester’s Nathan Walker required to attendance of the Ambulance Service and a trip to hospital.

With United losing two of the expected back-four to illness, Mickey Lewis was happy to be able to call on the services of the returning Olu Durojaiye who filled in alongside Harold Joseph with Colin Mugoya taking over the right-back slot.

It was however not the start the United boss was looking for as in just the fourth minute, a sweeping cross-field pass from Magpies player/manager Mark Jermyn picked out Ben Wood on the left. Wood advanced and hit a low cross that was swept home first time by Lewis Morgan.

Ten minutes later Louis Wells was almost left red faced when he appeared to misjudge a long throw from Wood that bounced before him, the United ‘keeper finger tipping the ball inches wide of his net with a pair of Magpies stealing in behind him.

In a half of little chances, the only other real efforts of the period came from United’s Cole Brown and Keenan King, both failing to trouble Shane Murphy in the visitors goal.

The second period was not much brighter to be honest although United did start to push forwards with more speed after the introduction of substitutes Melford Simpson and Matt Sinclair.

In the 61st minute a pass across the park found Sam Humphreys on the right side, his cross was met sweetly on the volley by Adam Everitt who was denied by a flying block by Matt Oldring that sent the ball out for a corner.

United were not to be denied though as from the resultant throw-in the ball was collected by Matt Sinclair who played a short pass to Humphreys who smashed the ball back into the top corner of Murphy’s net to draw the home side level.

Ten minutes later a mass mid-air collision in the Magpies box saw Murphy go down with a thigh injury but more urgent treatment was needed for the Magpies’ Nathan Walker who lay motionless after landing badly.

With both sides’ medical staff attending to Walker, the situation appeared to be serious and an ambulance was called while the medical staff did their best to keep the players head still for fear of causing further potential damage. At this stage referee Lamport made the sensible decision to return both teams to the changing rooms while medical treatment was given, Walker eventually being taken to hospital for treatment and checks.

The game itself re-started more than an hour after it had been stopped and it was the visitors who struck what was to become the winner, David Jerrard stepping up to curl a superb free-kick from 20 yards beyond the wall and into Wells’ net.

Despite pushing for a second equaliser it was not to be for United although they will wonder how it didn’t come in the final minute of the 90. Brown beat two defenders on the left and crossed low into the six yard box, the first shot from Sinclair being blocked on the line by Neil Martin and when Everitt swept the loose ball goalwards it was once again a last ditch clearance by Martin on the line that kept the Magpies ahead.

Despite his lack of mobility due to injury, Murphy again denied United in stoppage time as Brown collected a huge Wells punt, the young winger controlling the ball and hitting the target only to see Murphy push his shot around the post.

On behalf of all at Hayes & Yeading we would like to wish Nathan Walker a speedy recovery and would also like to thank both sets of fans for their immaculate behaviour during the long injury break.
