Paul Hughes’ United side gave themselves a real shot at avoiding the drop on Tuesday evening with a comprehensive victory over bottom markers Cinderford Town.

In an even start to the game, both sides had a real chance to break the deadlock within the first five minutes. Mitchell Weiss broke in to the visitors area on the left, his low driven centre was blocked out to Leo Donnellan who skied his shot from 12 yards. Within seconds a long through ball at the other end saw Nick Harrhy break away, his effort with just Danny Boness to beat angling across the face of goal and wide of the far post.

Three minutes later though United got the vital early breakthrough when a weak back-pass saw Sahr Kabba get to the ball first only to be sent tumbling by Cinderford ‘keeper Cameron Clarke. David Hutton stepped up to the mark and duly sent Clarke the wrong way.

United continued to push for a quick fire second, Frankie Jones was denied by Clarke’s legs at the near post although the United midfielder was not to be denied as after eighteen minutes he powered home a Hutton free-kick to double United’s lead.

With United holding all the cards, it was another 25 minutes before we saw a noteworthy effort, Weiss collecting on the left corner of the area and hitting a drive that only just cleared the Cinderford crossbar with United holding a two goal advantage at the break.

Just after the hour mark United’s pressure paid off as number three arrived, what was to be the first of a twelve minute Kabba hat-trick. Hutton played a corner short to Donnellan on the edge of the box, his shot was partially blocked with Kabba nipping in quickest to prod home at the near post.

Sammie Hicks sent in a 25 yard drive that went just wide of the United goal before Kabba’s second arrived on 72 minutes. Donnellan intercepted a poor pass in the middle of the park and played the bal forwards to Weiss who helped the ball on to Kabba who slid the ball neatly past Clarke into the corner of the net.

Just two minutes later Kabba completed his hat-trick when a neat reverse pass by Weiss sent his strike partner through again and Kabba did the rest, beating the on-coming Clarke with ease.

With a couple of minutes to go United should have had number six, Tom Broadbent found Jones with a fine cross-field ball, the midfielder lifted the ball over his marker before playing it forwards to Anthony Edgar who lofted the ball over Clarke only for it to go wide of the far post.

The final chance of the game fell to the visitors in stoppage, who to their credit never stopped trying to push forwards, when Harrhy broke away only to be denied by a fine save by Boness who stood firm to push the shot to safety.
