Hayes & Yeading seem to have found some form in the League Cup as Terry Brown’s Basingstoke Dragons were slayed at Holloways Park on Tuesday evening, we now need to translate this form into League points starting Saturday with a visit from Cinderford Town.

It was the visitors from Hampshire who started the brighter without overly troubling Danny Boness in the United goal with the first real opening falling at the other end on 13 minutes. Soloman Sambou played the ball forwards to Mitchell Weiss, his driven shot from a tight angle was blocked wide at the near post by Dragons ‘keeper Kieran Greene.

Basingstoke continued to hold the balance of possession and should have taken the lead in the eighteenth minute when a deep corner by Sam Deadfield was met at the far post by Joe Gater but he headed wide of the target.

A pair of Boness saves on 25 minutes kept the scoresheet blank. A lobbed pass over the United defence found Aaron Jarvis, his first time shot being pushed wide by Boness. The resultant corner was taken quickly and played deep to Aaron Redford at the back post, Boness again standing in the way as he pushed this effort around the opposite post.

Just three minutes later Boness was again in action when Gater got a flick to a Deadfield free-kick, the United stopper again tipping the effort around his post.

As the half time break approached, United started to take control of the ball more and a forceful forwards run by Connor Toomey saw him lay the ball of to Weiss who saw his initial shot blocked and when the ball came back to the United striker he tried to lob Greene but was just too high.

The opener for United was only minutes away though as Sambou touched the ball off to Weiss who nipped past two defenders before firing home with the outside of his foot giving Greene no chance.

United nearly doubled the lead on the whistle when a crossed Josh Chamberlain free-kick looked to be heading for the top corner only to be denied by a fine tip over by Greene.

The second half started very much the same with United holding a lot of the ball with a second goal coming just eight minutes after the re-start. A defensive clearance by the Dragons was headed firmly back by Toomey, Weiss taking a touch before cracking a volley into the top corner despite a brave attempt by Greene who did get his fingers to the ball.

As the visitors looked for a way back in, Boness saved well low down from Nana Owusu before United killed off the game in the 71st minute. Substitute Mahlondo Martin advanced to the edge of the box and shot, Greene was unable to hold the ball and Weiss was on hand to tap home to complete his hat-trick.

Two minutes from time Martin could have made it four when he latched on to a Brian Evans through ball only to be denied by Greene’s timely interception as he toed the ball away to safety.
