Hayes and Yeading United were soundly beaten by Cambridge United in this First Round Proper FA Youth Cup tie on a damp evening at the Abbey stadium.

The first half did not contain much of an inkling as to what was to come as United carved out more chances than their hosts inside the opening period. Just five minutes had elapsed, when following good work on the right by Dylan Kearney, the ball found its way to Matt Sinclair whose effort went agonisingly wide of the goal frame.

Seventeen minutes were on the clock when United were denied a penalty, for what looked to be handball in the box. It was almost halfway through the first period before the hosts had their first shot on goal, a 20 yard effort from Matthew Foy, which United 'keeper Hugo Sobte did well to field.

Just two minutes later, an even more vociferous appeal for a United spot kick, was once again turned down by referee Mr Hanna. Immediately after, another 20 yard effort, this time from Sinclair, flew over the bar.

With 13 minutes of the half remaining a harshly awarded free kick was saved by Sobte only for Jordan Brown to stab home the rebound from close range, to give the hosts a scarcely deserved lead.

With time running out at the end of the first period, a cross from the left, only just evaded the on rushing Jack Doyle and United went in a goal adrift at the break.

Just five minutes into the second period, a close range strike from the ever dangerous Brown increased the home sides advantage. United strove to reduce the arrears, and after 57 minutes, a right wing cross from Doyle found the head of Cole Brown but flew harmlessly wide.

Just over an hour had passed when the hosts grabbed their third goal of the evening. A left wing cross was met once again by Brown, who had the simple task of a tap in, to complete his hat trick.

Now the game was effectively over as a contest, the pyrotechnics in the Cambridgeshire night sky started to fizzle out, as did the game.

Six minutes were left on referee Hanna's stopwatch when he eventually awarded United a penalty at the third time of asking. Unfortunately, skipper Dylan Kearney blasted the spot kick high over the crossbar and into row Z of the stand behind the goal.

The hosts were not quite finished, and as the visitors tired, two further strikes added some gloss to the scoreline with both Justin Leavers and Josh Emmins adding their names to the scoresheet.

We would like to wish Cambridge the best of luck in the next round against Stevenage.
