Manager Tristan Lewis made a single change to his starting line-up for this local derby with Brendan Kiernan swopping his place on the bench for Tyrell Miller-Rodney’s starting position in the side. Two newcomers arrived on the bench in the form of United’s all-time leading scorer Josh Scott and loanee striker Charlie Strutton.

Chances came early but sadly were not a prelude to a goal fest. In just the third minute Jake Nicholson’s corner kick found its way to Brendan Kiernan at the far post, his shot on the turn being just too high to trouble Jonathan North in the ‘Stones goal. The visitors first sight of goal came a few moments later when Bradley Hudson-Odoi fired across the box to Josh Hutchinson but he was wide with his flick.

‘Stones Scott Davies brought the best out of United ‘keeper Dan Lincoln on 14 minutes with a free-kick from 35 yards that was heading for the top corner, Lincoln tipping the ball over the top. Play soon switched ends and good approach work from the United strikers Elliot Benyon and Ismael Ehui set up a shooting chance for Nicholson but he narrowly missed the target from the edge of the box.

As the half moved into the final ten minutes, a long Davies throw-in was inadvertently flicked on by a defender to Hudson-Odoi who got his toe to the ball in front of Lincoln but he could only divert the ball over the United goal. The final chance of the half again fell to the visitors when a long punt upfield was neatly chested down by Jefferson Louis to Matt Ball but his volley was too high to worry Lincoln.

The second half took a while to get into any rhythm but around the hour mark both sides went close without troubling the opposition custodian, Nicholson teed up a shooting opportunity for Max Worsfold while for the ‘Stones Louis set up Hutchinson, both players efforts going just the wrong side of the respective uprights.

On 68 minutes Lincoln again pulled off a fine save to keep the scoresheet blank, Davies’s deep corner was met at the far post by Tom Hamblin who forced a diving save from Lincoln with the loose ball being hacked away by a grateful Adam Everitt.

United then took up the forward progression and Benyon finally got goal side of Hamblin but having been forced wide, his low driven centre was cleared away inside his own six yard box by Wes Parker. This was to be Benyon’s last action as a full change up front saw him and Ehui replaced by Strutton and Scott, a change that almost paid dividends five minutes later.

Alex Osborn received the ball on the left and played it forwards to Strutton, he in turn pulled it back to Scott who let fly with his favoured left foot, the ball going across the face of North’s goal but just the wrong side of the far post.

In stoppage time it was the turn of the visitors’ substitutes to combine AS Shaun Lucien created an opening for Jonny Wright but his 20 yard drive sailed over Lincoln’s crossbar and the game was to end in deadlock.
