It was a second bad day at the office in 72 hours for Garry Haylock’s side as United’s hastily assembled back-line were carved apart by the home side leaving United with a three goal deficit within just 21 minutes.

United gave debuts at the back to recent arrivals Luke Ifil, Aaron Tumwa and Kyle Clinton with the experienced Darren Purse making up the defensive quartet.

After an even first few minutes, it was the Stones who struck first in the ninth minute. A dangerous corner from Scott Davies on the right saw the ball flicked on to the unlucky Darren Purse's shoulder with the ball finding the corner of James Hamon’s net for an unfortunate own goal.

Four minutes later the lead was doubled, Joshua McLeod-Urquhart played the ball over Kyle Clinton in the right channel, Davies outmuscled the young centre-back and ran on to fire past Hamon in to the far corner.

United almost hit back minutes later when Ashley Lodge won possession in midfield and found Elliott Simpson, his first time effort from 20 yards going the wrong side of the upright.

Things went from bad to worse on 21 minutes when a ball in from the left picked out former United skipper Matty Harriott 18 yards from goal, the one thing you don’t give him there is space and time, he had both and smashed the ball low beyond Hamon to make it 3-0 before most of us had blinked.

As the half came to a close, a couple of shots were blocked inside the Stones box, first from Elliot Benyon and then Lodge, but the move came to nothing and it was in at the break three adrift and virtually game over based on the first 45 minutes.

United opened up a little more brightly in the second half without really testing James Bransgrove in the home goal, in fact this was to continue for pretty much the rest of the game.

At the other end though, Harriott volley wide after good work out wide by Davies and Bradley Hudson-Odoi and Jonny Wright only just cleared the United crossbar with a free-kick from the left corner of the area.

Lodge was denied a chance to pull one back by McLeod-Urquhart who blocked out his shot in front of Bransgrove on 73 minutes before United’s best effort came on 82 minutes, substitutes Tom Collins and Luke Williams combining, the latter’s well hit shot going inches wide of the upright.

As the game closed out, the home side could have increased their winning margin. A Davies cross sailed goalwards and required a tip over by Hamon and then Davies sent substitute Nathan Mavila through but with Hamon near the edge of the area, the West Ham loanee’s shot clipped wide off the right-hand post.
