Hayes & Yeading failed to repeat the victory of just a few weeks ago at Gander Green Lane as visitors Sutton United came to York Road and went home with all three points on a gusty Saturday afternoon.

With Lewis Ferrell being injured in the victory at Bath, Manager Garry Haylock brought in former United defender Emmanuel Monthe on a short term loan from fellow National South side Havant & Waterlooville and he lined up alongside Devante McKain at the heart of the United defence.

With the visitors starting with the wind and kicking downhill, it was not a good start for Haylock’s side as with little momentum being had going forwards, the visitors raced in to a two goal lead by the halfway mark in the first period.

The first came on 13 minutes when a swinging cross from the right by Kevin Amankwaah was met by the head of an “offside” looking Dan Fitchett with the ball finding its way past Dan Lincoln into the far corner and with no flag raised by the assistant on the far side United found themselves adrift.

Lincoln then saved from Bedsente Gomis before Fitchett struck again in the 22nd minute, collecting a loose ball after Tom Bolarinwa had blocked Devante McKain’s attempted clearance, having the simple task of rolling the ball into an empty net.

United earned a corner just minutes later and when Max Worsfold’s kick was headed skywards at the near post by Elliot Benyon, McKain rose highest to head beyond the defender on the line to bring United back into the game (left).

As the half came to a close a looping Luke Williams centre was met by Benyon, his header hitting a defender and going wide. The resultant corner found skipper Adam Everitt but his header was too high to trouble Ross Worner in the U’s goal.

In stoppage time the visitors, and Fitchett, could have had a third when the striker collected the ball in the box only for his shot on the turn to be well blocked by Jake Sheppard.

The U’s opened the second half with pace also as a quick ball up to Tommy Wright saw him advance in to the United box before screwing his shot across the face of goal and wide of the far post.

The U’s had Worner to thank for keeping them ahead a few minutes later when Lincoln’s long free-kick was helped on down the right by Sheppard to Williams, his low centre picked out Matt Jay who swept the ball low towards goal only for Worner to somehow get his hand to the ball on the ground and deflect it over the crossbar.

Having pushed away a previous 30 yard Dan Wishart free-kick, on 77 minutes Lincoln didn’t manage to gather another that had bounced just in front of him with U’s skipper Jamie Collins pouncing to fire home from close range to renew the visitors two goal advantage.

Both ‘keepers had a say in keeping the score as it was in the final ten minutes. Worner doing well to turn a McKain shot around the post while at the other end, substitute Stuart Fleetwood broke away and despite being chased down and held up by Sheppard still managed to get a shot away that Lincoln push out for a corner.
