It was a much improved display by Hayes and Yeading which saw them earn a well deserved point against a dangerous St Albans outfit. Following the mid-week defeat against Hemel Hempstead, Tristan made four changes.

The first chance of the game fell to one of these changes after some early possession from the home side. After just 3 minutes Ismael Ehui was played through on goal but his powerful shot was hit straight at Joe Welch. United were nearly gifted the lead when Max Worsfold put in a dangerous cross which was flashed at by a defender and went just wide of the post with the ‘keeper struggling.

Just before the half hour mark, United were inches away from taking advantage of their early dominance, Alex Osborn was expertly found on the left wing and his cross was met by the rising Benyon, but his thumping header smashed against the woodwork.

At last Hayes & Yeading’s dominance was finally rewarded four minutes before the break when United broke directly from a St Albans corner through a brilliant run by Ehui. His shot could only be parried to the lurking Benyon who calmly slotted the ball home under Welch.

The hosts looked for an immediate response and would have been rewarded if it were not for two outstanding tackles by Lewis Ferrell and Worsfold which meant United would go into the break with a lead although they will think themselves unlucky that they didn’t convert any more of their chances.

St Albans continued the pressure at the start of the second half and within four minutes of the restart were level. Louie Theophanous was played through one-on-one with Dan Lincoln but the striker stylishly curled the ball past the diving ‘keeper to the top right corner.

The home side immediately looked for a lead when Devante McKain received yellow for a tackle just outside the box. However, the free kick was straight at the wall and was cleared with ease.

St Albans believed that they should have had a penalty when Worsfold brought down Ade Yusuff who was looking to make an instant impact having just been brought on, but the referee paid no attention to their claims.

Only five minutes later the Saints players were again appealing to the referee, this time wanting Ferrell to see red for a deliberate handball stopping a break for the home side, but Ferrell received only yellow.

Just a couple of minutes later, Dan Lincoln was forced into making a good save when a corner was headed back across goal and was fired goalwards from point blank range, but Lincoln gathered it well.

In the final 20 minutes United were really pressing for a winner which would see them collect their third win of the campaign with both Harry Grant and Josh Scott brought on to add some attacking force.

This led to captain Adam Everitt firing from all of 25 yards out and whistling over the bar. Alex Osborn was then played through on goal but Welch bravely came off his line and dealt with the danger.

With just five minutes to go, it was St Albans turn to go searching for a winner. When the left back put in an inviting ball only for Ben Martin to blaze his header over. The last chance of the game fell to United in stoppage time when a Nicholson corner evaded everyone and landed at the feet of Josh Scott, who is still searching for his first goal in his second spell with the club, but his left footed effort went over.

United will feel unlucky to only take a point out of the game but will hope to build on this performance and get a much needed win next week against Poole Town in the Emirates FA Cup.
