Hayes & Yeading once again found themselves dumped out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle as high flying Southern Premier side Poole Town came to York Road and went home victorious by the odd goal in five.
Manager Tristan Lewis made one enforced change to his starting XI with Harry Grant coming in for Alex Osborn who had returned to his parent club at the end of his loan spell.
United started well enough with Ismael Ehui going close with a drive across the face of goal but the visitors struck the first blow with their first meaningful attack of the game on 11 minutes. A thump up field found Luke Burbidge in space on the right side but his attempted cross was well defended away for a corner by Max Worsfold, sadly that was not as well defended as Steve Devlin’s kick picked out the massive frame of Michael Walker at the far post and he headed past Dan Lincoln to put the Dorset side ahead.
Jake Nicholson and Ehui then combined well to send Elliot Benyon into the Poole box, his low driven centre spinning up off Poole keeper Nick Hutchings before going just wide of the upright.
Poole were soon back on the attack as Luke Roberts swept the ball goalwards from Burbidge’s centre, Lincoln did well to claw the ball away with Marvin Brooks heading the rebound over the top. A controversial second for the visitors soon arrived though. A long ball up field saw Richard Gillespie collect the ball, in what appeared to be a clear offside position, and when the assistants flag remained down the Poole striker kept his composure and lobbed the ball perfectly over Lincoln who was caught in no man’s land.
The final chance of the half fell to United with Nicholson’s deep centre being headed back into the middle by Devante McKain with Hutchings fielding Ehui’s header comfortably.
Both sides made changes at the break, United sending Josh Scott and Luke Williams in to the fray while the visitors introduced Will Spetch to their forward line.
Indeed it was Scott who had the first chance of the second half as he collected Worsfold’s centre but Hutchings was equal to his effort. Minutes later the visitors substitution paid dividends, after Lincoln had twice kept the visitors score down to two, saving from Burbidge and Spetch, an Adam Everitt clearance was headed straight back to the unmarked Spetch who poked the ball past Lincoln’s dive to give his side what was to prove an unassailable three goal lead, but only just.
Four minutes later United finally got back into the game as Scott collected a Luke Williams pass after the ball bounced away from defender Jamie Whisken, the United striker turning his marker before smashing the ball past Hutchings with his less favoured right foot.
With United still pushing for another, it finally came as the game entered its final fifteen minutes, Ehui powering a header, from Worsfold’s corner, past Hutchings.
Unfortunately for United the ultimate comeback to earn a replay was not to be and chances were limited to a couple of long range efforts from Dylan Kearney before referee Mr Buonassisi brought proceedings to a close and the Dorset side moved into the next round.
