When it comes to recent weeks, the words of Bob Geldof come to mind, “tell me why I don’t like Mondays” in reference to our recent performances on said day when we have found ourselves 3-0 down and pretty much game over in the blink of an eye this pretty much says it all.

The latest being the “visit” from our landlords Maidenhead United on Easter Monday. Manager Garry Haylock made one change to the side narrowly beaten at Havant with Emmanuel Monthe returning from suspension in place of Olumide Durojaiye who dropped down to the bench.

Things couldn’t have started worse for Hayes & Yeading as it took the Magpies just five minutes to break through the United defence. Two poor attempts to deal with a throw-in from the right saw the ball just being helped into the path of defender Mark Nisbet and he fired past James Hamon from close range.

Things could have got worse quicker than they did for United had Hamon not pulled off an excellent point blank stop when Ryan Upward got to a near post corner first, the United stopper pushing his effort out with Darren Purse clearing the ball away.

Minutes later the usually reliable Elliot Benyon found himself free on the edge of the box after he had collected a Luke Ifil pass and his marker had slipped over, unusually for United’s top scorer, his effort was high and wide of Carl Pentney’s goal.

On the half hour mark the Magpies netted again. A break from the middle of the park saw the ball being fed forwards to Dave Tarpey and he, with the aid of a deflection from a sliding defensive challenge, found the back of Hamon’s net.

Things got worse just three minutes later when a cross from the right picked out Upward and he fired a volley past Hamon to give the “visitors” a three goal advantage.

Just before the break and with United showing little or nothing in the attacking half, the Magpies went close again, this time Harry Pritchard intercepting a weak Sean Cronin clearance before firing just wide of the target.

The second half was to bring a bit more invention from United in an attacking sense, fuelled in part by the craft and guile shown by the arrival from the bench of the experienced James Harper.

Indeed it was Harper who fuelled a mini revival on 71 minutes when he lashed home a left foot volley from 20 yards that flew into the top corner of the Magpies net.

Luke Williams headed over after a Shepherd Murombedzi centre was only partially cleared and then with six minutes to go United scored a second as Purse’s cross from the left caught on the wind and sailed over Pentney straight into the top corner of the Magpies net.

Sadly the comeback attempt stopped there, as United pushed forwards for what would have been an unlikely equaliser the hosts hit back with both barrels as former United man Jake Reid and James Mulley both found the net in stoppage time to seal a victory that leaves Garry Haylock’s side teetering on the brink with just five games left.
