Hayes & Yeading’s quest for silverware ended for 2015/16 as United exited the Middlesex Senior Cup at the hands of Ryman Leaguers Hampton & Richmond Borough on Tuesday evening at Hillingdon Borough.
With both sides fielding “experimental” line-ups with a combination of youth and experience it was to be a game that was somewhat disjointed although a poor playing surface at the Middlesex Stadium, who hosted the game for United, was a big factor in this.
Early chances saw both sides strike the woodwork, for the visitors this came in just the sixth minute when debutant ‘keeper Rourke Pickford missed his punch from a free-kick, the loose ball being fired against the foot of the post before being hacked clear. For United, Cole Brown’s near post corner was helped on by Ismael Ehui only for that to also strike the post before going wide.
Pickford then saved well from Josh Casey, who had collected a Jerome Federico centre, before the Beavers found the United net twice in sixty seconds, both scorers being former United players. The opener being touched in at the near post by Dan Thompson before Federico fired beyond Pickford having beaten his marker in the box.
United started well in the second half with Dylan Kearney going close early on before Hampton ‘keeper Mark Smith was forced to tip over a defensive clearance from Aaron Sekhon who almost found the net from the half-way line.
With 14 minutes to play United pulled a goal back in rather controversial fashion and much to the disgust of the Hampton players who berated the referee and his assistant for the next five minutes. Josh Scott challenged for the ball near the corner flag, having escaped a seemingly blatant push in the back on Hamad Lawal, the ball then appeared to go well out of play before being dragged back from where the striker picked out Max Worsfold on the far side of the box and he smashed the ball home off the underside of the bar.
Much like Hampton in the first half, United had a good chance to score again within a minute when Ehui set up Scott only for his driven shot to go over off the top of the crossbar.
Chances after this were few and far between, the best being a 25 yard effort from Scott that Smith pushed away diving to his right.
