Hayes & Yeading United drew an FA Trophy tie for the first time in our short history on a cold Sunday afternoon at York Road as a stoppage time Elliot Benyon strike takes the tie to Eastbourne on Tuesday evening for a second attempt at progressing for both sides.

Manager Garry Haylock’s was devoid of his two regular central defenders while several of the side had been suffering from illness during the week and been unable to train, he was however able to bring in recent loan signing from Reading, Jake Sheppard, who impressed on debut.

Despite it blowing a gale down the York Road pitch, both sides were thankful to their goalkeepers within just six minutes. First to be tested was United’s Dan Lincoln who pulled off a fantastic reaction save to deny Sports skipper Ian Simpemba who had got his head to an in-swinging Jack Evans corner kick.

Minutes later at the other end, it was Sports stopper Lewis Carey who himself went full stretch to tip over an Elliot Benyon curler that looked destined for the top corner after Adam Everitt had won possession midway into the visitors half.

Despite the visitors having the wind and slope advantage, it was United who were making chances as the half progressed. Mason Spence had a shot deflected wide and Lewis Ferrell rose highest to a Spence corner but couldn’t keep his effort down and consequently failed to trouble Carey.

United maybe should have taken the lead just after the half hour mark when Benyon was put through but although he slid the ball past Carey’s dive, the ball rolled the wrong side of the upright and the scoreline remained blank.

Six minutes from the break the deadlock was broken, but by the visitors. Miguel Baptista played a free-kick from the left in with the wind, the ball was headed out by the United defence but only as far as Jack Evans who rifled in a shot that flew past Lincoln giving the ‘keeper no chance.

As the half came to a close the visitors almost snatched a second when Nathaniel Pinney collected the ball in the box, made for the bye-line and cut it back to the near post where the bobbling ball was punched clear from a gaggle of players by Lincoln and the half came to an end with no further incident.

United came out firing in the second half and it took just 54 seconds for the tie to be levelled. Top scorer Ismael Ehui collecting the ball in the Sports area, moving back past his marker before firing low into the near corner past the desperate dive of Carey.

The tie went into a real stake period with very little in the way of chances at either end with Carey tipping over a Matt Jay header the only real action of note until the final five minutes whereby the Sports again took the lead when a deep free-kick was nodded back into the mix by Craig Stone with Nathan Collier poking home from close range.

The new determination that seems to be instilled in United came to the fore in stoppage time when Everitt’s long throw into the Sports box was allowed to bobble around in the six yard box with Benyon being the quickest to force the ball home and earn a replay for United on the South Coast in 48 hours time.
