On a pleasantly warm afternoon at York Road, United totally dominated proceedings against a Basingstoke outfit, who were just not at the races.
The gaffer made four changes from last Saturdays trip to Maidstone, Ben Gerring and Adam Everitt both returning after spells on the treatment table with the latter taking the captains armband. Max Worsfold returned to left-back replacing the injured Howard Hall, and top scorer Ismael Ehui took his place up front in a reshaped line-up.
Strangely enough, the first action of note, came within 60 seconds of the start, with a Basingstoke free-kick being comfortably fielded by Dan Lincoln in the United goal. Soon after a ball out to Chris Flood on the left saw him crash a ball into the six yard box that was superbly cleared fron in front of goal by Devante McKain.
For the remainder of the game, United were in almost total ascendancy playing some sublime one and two touch football along the way.
Just eight minutes had elapsed on the clock when Jake Nicholson found Alex Osborn on the left flank, his cross being met by Elliot Benyon who placed his header perfectly into the corner of the net, giving former United stopper Aaron Howe in the visitors goal no chance.
Nine minutes later, Benyon unleashed an 18 yard shot which Howe did well to save at the base of his right hand upright.
Midway through the half, came a near carbon copy of the opening United goal, but this time, Benyon's header from Ismael Ehui's cross was off target. United only had to wait a further three minutes to double the advantage. A free-kick some 25 yards from goal after a foul on Ehui saw Nicholson step up and curl the ball superbly into the bottom left hand corner
of the net, again giving Howe no chance.
Lincoln was called into action to push a low drive from the left corner of the box around the post before comfortably fielding a Flood far post header. In between these chances a neat chest down by Ehui set up Osborn but he was just too high with his shot.
The second period began in similar vein to the preceeding half with United in almost total dominance although again the first opening went to the visitors courtesy of a break away from a United corner that saw substitute Sam Akinde sprint past Jim Fenlon into the United box before firing across goal missing all and sundry.
72 minutes had elapsed when Ismael Ehui found Nicholson on the edge of the Basingstoke area, his shot was pushed onto the post by Howe, the ball then rebounded to Benyon who crashed the ball back against the underside of the crossbar from an acute angle.
Play then briefly switched to the other end of the park. A mad scramble ensued in the United box, which resulted in Basingstoke's Akinde blasting over from about eight yards.
Almost immediately, the action was back at the other end.
Lincoln's goal-kick found its way straight to Ehui on the edge of the box, he moved inside and found Osborn who took the ball to his left before firing across Howe into the far corner for United's third goal of the afternoon.
With time running out, there was one further effort for the visitors, when another ex United man Liam Enver-Marum
tried his luck from 20 yards, but his effort flew well wide.
