Chertsey Town 1

A second half goal blitz saw Hayes and Yeading United put Chertsey Town to the sword and boost their chances of winning the Ryman League.

Hayes and Yeading scored from their first attack, Cole Brown getting in behind the Chertsey back line before tucking the ball inside the far post. Just three minutes later, the same player doubled the lead, seizing on the loose ball after Jack Woods had done so well to prevent Jack Thomson-Wheeler's free kick from reaching the top corner and slamming the ball in from close range. Immediately afterwards, Matt Marques almost rubbed salt in the wound but fired wide from the edge of the box.

With such a flurry of activity early on, it was perhaps too hopeful to expect it to last, but the extent to which play did lull was remarkable. Although Hayes and Yeading enjoyed much possession, Chertsey composed themselves well. It wasn't until late in the half when the next major chance came, and again it was Brown who shot goalwards, following Colin Mugoya's flick on, only for Jack Sweeney to clear the ball off the line.

Out of the blue, Chertsey got a goal back, courtesy of Sam Thomson, who was the beneficiary of a mix up from a quick goal kick from George Upton which went wrong and ended up at his feet. Thomson composed himself and found the bottom corner with his shot.

United seemed determined to make up for that setback. Marques fired a fierce drive which deflected over the bar off James Cartwright. Then, Kreshnik Rexhepi tried his luck from long range but the ball rose too high. However, in stoppage time, Ben Slade was able to find the net with a looping header at the far post which beat Woods all ends up. Still, there was time before the break for a Chertsey near miss, Upton making up for his part in the goal by pulling off a great save to deny Jack Holmes from a free kick, diving to his left to push the ball away.

United manager Tristan Lewis decided to change his line up for the second half, and they started it strongly. A Thomson-Wheeler free kick got a nick off the wall before being gathered in by Woods while another was bravely blocked by a covering defender. Chertsey responded as Upton had to be alert to intercept a throughball aimed at Sherwood right in front of goal.

However, United were to get on the goal trail again on the hour with five in quick succession. Another Thomson-Wheeler free kick found the head of Ross McKernan in a crowded penalty area and he powered his header into the corner. Then three minutes later, it was 5-1 as Thomson-Wheeler hit a beautiful free kick directly into the top corner. Brown then turned provider for Conor Tierney to turn the ball in from ten yards after good work on the left. It wasn't long before the seventh came, Thomson-Wheeler "buying a ticket" with a shot from 25 yards which Woods would be disappointed not to have kept out. Slade got the eighth, nipping in in front of Timon Khyne-Sam to prod the ball home from point blank range.

Thomson got in behind the United defence for Chertsey but Upton was equal to his shot, blocking bravely with his legs. However, the play quickly switched again and substitute Aaron Fetherston took aim and curled a beauty in from 25 yards, before fellow sub Khyne-Sam rattled in the tenth through a crowded six yard box after inadvertently blocking Slade's goalbound shot.

Brown completed the scoring in the 90th minute to notch his hat-trick rounding off a fine move involving Slade and Tierney which culminated in the latter fizzing in a cross which Brown powerfully headed in.
