Hayes & Yeading’s Academy side moved to within two points of back-to-back Ryman Youth League West titles with a come from behind victory over Camberley Town on Thursday evening.

High flying United couldn’t have got off to a worse start though when in just the second minute, a long punt from Camberley ‘keeper Ollie Rayan cleared Conor Tierney allowing Pritpal Raju to nip in before George Upton to poke the ball into the United net.

Minutes later and with pressure starting to build from the home side, a shove in the back on Ben Slade in the box saw referee Batten point to the spot. Skipper Jack Thomson-Wheeler took the kick but it was saved by Rayan diving to his left.

Within seconds at the other end the visitors should have doubled their lead, Josh Kempton being left totally unmarked from a corner but his headed effort cleared the United goal.

Dylan Kearney and Matt Marques both went close for United, the former drawing a point blank stop from Rayan before United deservedly levelled on 30 minutes when Cole Brown rose highest to meet a Marques cross, his header looping into the top corner just out of Rayan’s reach.

With United now pulling the strings in the Camberley half of field, Marques saw a rasping drive clear the crossbar by inches before Ross McKernan’s burst into the box forced a good save from Rayan who palmed away his shot.

United were not to be denied a half time lead though as Brown netted his second with virtually the last kick of the half, turning his marker before firing home after being set up by Kearney.

The second half started in much the same fashion with United holding the upper hand in the possession stakes. Within minutes Marques had forced Rayan to push away an angled drive, the ball falling to Kearney who hooked his effort against the bar from close range.

United were not to be denied a third though as just two minutes later, Thomson-Wheeler’s excellent in-swinging corner was headed home at the far post by a stooping Brown to complete his second hat-trick of the week.

To the visitors credit they continued to play a good passing game rather than let their heads drop. Upton had to move quickly off his line to deny Raju a second, pushing the ball out for a corner. The corner came in and was flicked on at the near post to the impressive Raju but his glancing header went the wrong side of the upright.

Just after the hour mark it was effectively game over when Marques collected a pinpoint Thomson-Wheeler pass and advanced to the left corner of the area before curling a shot beyond Rayan’s outstretched dive and into the far corner.

Marques again went close after good approach play from Kearney and McKernan before number five arrived ten minutes from time, Ben Slade arriving at the far post to touch home Brown’s cross.

As the game closed out, Upton did well to deny Bradley Passfield when he dived to block at the on-coming defender’s feet and then for United Brown almost grabbed a fourth from distance but Rayan pushed his effort around the post.
