Hayes & Yeading’s Academy side progressed into the second qualifying round of this season’s FA Youth Cup with a tense victory over a very good Bedfont Sports side on Wednesday evening, triumphing by the odd goal in five.

Early play saw the two teams, both still sporting 100% records, testing each other through the middle of the park without much worry for either ‘keeper, that is until the 15th minute when the home side broke the deadlock.

The impressive Callum O’Reilly crossed from the left wing, Norman Bokowski headed the ball back across the box to striker Malachi Calliste-Thompson and he guided the ball past George Upton into the far corner of the United net.

Within two minutes United could have drawn level but for a good save from Sports ‘keeper Tyler D’Cruz who got down well at the foot of his post to push away a Shariff Wilson shot after he had been set up by Prince Mbengui.

Shortly after this the Sports could have doubled their advantage when Calliste-Thompson picked out an unmarked Will McKelvie 20 yards out but his side footed effort was dealt with comfortably by the diving Upton.

Just before the half hour mark United were back on level terms. Matt Marques’ cross from the left evaded Nat Mensah in the centre, dropping to Wilson who took a touch before firing confidently past D’Cruz.

Play continued to swing from end to end with both sides showing some excellent control on the ball, indeed having just conceded, the home side had a good chance to go ahead again when skipper Joe Jackson’s cross from the right was met on the volley at the far post by O’Reilly but his effort went flying across the face of the United goal.

A third goal did come before the break and it was for United. Upton’s free-kick from just inside the box found Mensah near the Sports box, he neatly chested the ball to Jack Thomson-Wheeler who took it forwards before firing past D’Cruz from 18 yards to give United what was to be a half-time lead.

United created an early opening in the second half as Josiah Benjamin stooped to get his head to a Marques free-kick but was unable to guide the ball into the bottom corner and it went wide of the upright.

Just after the hour mark United earned a bit of breathing space by firing home a third as Mbengui controlled a Jake Rigby cross before turning and smashing the ball past D’Cruz.

That breathing space was to last just eight minutes though as Jackson raced into the United area and ended up on the floor with referee Mr Smith pointing to the spot, much to the annoyance of the United defence. Darryl Sanders took the responsibility and coolly sent Upton the wrong way to being the Sports to within a goal of parity.

Ten minutes later Sanders chipped a neat pass into the United box finding substitute Jay Jaskolski, his first time effort being pushed away by Upton before the United ‘keeper pounced on the loose ball.

United missed a great chance to steady the ship a minute later when a quick D’Cruz free-kick to Tyler Bryant just outside his own box saw Chris Rose charge down the ball and loft a shot back as D’Cruz retreated, only for the ball to clear the vacant goal.

Thomson-Wheeler went close again for United but deep into stoppage time the Sports must have thought they had levelled as a long punt from D’Cruz fell to Sanders just inside the box, he aimed for the bottom corner only to be denied by Upton who threw himself full stretch to his left to claw the ball out with Rigby clearing up as the final whistle sounded.
