New signing Saul Williams helped himself to a hat-trick as Hayes and Yeading United's reserve side started their Capital League campaign with a convincing victory at Biggleswade Town.

The first half was an entertaining and even tussle. Biggleswade had the first attempt on goal, direct from a short corner routine which culminated in an angled long shot from Kobayne Wilson which just cleared the crossbar.

Coming soon afterwards, United's first effort was from an equally long distance. Dean Inman picked out Saul Williams on the left and the forward cut inside before missing the top corner with his shot by inches. Prince Mbengui got the first attempt on target, but it was comfortably gathered in by Tom Gowan in The Waders' goal.

The home side probably should have opened the scoring with their next chance as Wilson's trickery on the right led to a teasing low centre which Ryan Garrett hit into the side netting with just Grant Smith in goal to beat.

United responded with a spell of pressure during which Dean Inman had a header from Rhys Murrell-Williamson's corner cleared off the line and then he hit a direct free-kick fiercely, but straight at Gowan.

For the first time in the game, the chances started to dry up, but out of the blue, United took the lead as Jack Thomson-Wheeler stretched to win a loose ball in midfield, directing his interception into Williams's feet, allowing the forward to advance before drilling his shot into the bottom far corner.

It took a while for Biggleswade to respond, but when they did, a very neat interchange of short passes between Wilson and Zane Banton ended with Luke Gurney drilling a powerful shot inches over.

At the other end, five minutes before half time, Gowan produced a superb double save, first tipping Murrell-Williamson's piledriver free-kick onto the underside of the crossbar before getting up to block Williams' follow up shot.

The second half started in a much more one sided manner in United's favour and remained that way for long periods. Four minutes in, United doubled their lead and it was through Williams again. Murrell-Williamson and De'Reece Vanderhyde combined well on the right, the latter producing a cross to the far post which Williams drilled first time low past Gowan. It wasn't long before a third was added as well, substitute Shariff Wilson advancing at pace before threading the ball through to Murrell-Williamson who cut inside before wrapping his shot just inside the far post.

The dominance of the away side continued unabated. Williams went close to his hat-trick with a low shot through a crowded box which just curled away from the post, and Gowan parried away another Murrell-Williamson drive, this time to the near post. George Mulonda also had a strike at goal which was inadvertently blocked by Wilson on its way in.

The fourth inevitably came in the 68th minute, and it brought about Williams' hat-trick as he latched onto a loose back header from Yamin Mousli before deftly chipping the stranded Gowan.

Both Vanderhyde and Marques tested Gowan from long range and after both Inman and Thomson-Wheeler won good strong challenges in midfield to release Murrell-Williamson but he ran out of room due to good pressure from the home defence.

Biggleswade got a break away goal on 79 minutes as a long pass from midfield put Banton clear and he was able to finish past the advancing Smith. However, it wasn't to deny United victory, and they might've added a fifth late on as Williams was denied another when as he rolled the ball past Gowan, he was pulled up for an earlier foul on Haydn Essam.
