Hayes & Yeading fought hard throughout the 90 minutes against a strong physical Sutton United side at York Road on Sunday afternoon in a game that saw the points shared as Jessy Reindorf pegged United back after Louis-Rae Beadle had given us a first half lead.

The visitors started well although they were dealt a blow after just 8 minutes when former United favourite Dale Binns had to leave the field with a nasty looking injury, to be replaced by Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick.

Just prior to the Binns substitution Dean Inman made a sharp tackle in the United box after Craig Dundas had sent Reindorf through on goal.

Around the 20 minute mark the U’s had two good chances to open the scoring both created by the pace of Hippolyte-Patrick down the right flank. His first cross being met by Dundas who fired wide at the near post and then after another burst of pace and cross saw two efforts blocked in the box, the loose ball was touched to Michael Spillane who hit a rasping drive that thundered into the inside of the right-hand post and flew across the face of goal and wide of the left-hand post.

From the resultant goal-kick the deadlock was broken, at the other end. Debutant United ‘keeper Grant Smith’s kick was flicked on by Pat Cox to Louis-Rae Beadle, he exchanged passes with Ashleigh Artwell before running through on goal, rounding the grounded Tom Lovelock, and firing past the covering defender on the line (above).

Minutes later Bedsente Gomis went close from 20 yards for the visitors as did Cox for United as he met a Matt Ruby flick from Rhys Murrell-Williamson’s corner but his header looped the wrong side of the upright.

As the half drew to a close both sides went close to troubling the scorer. Cox set up Beadle who was inches wide from 25 yards and then in stoppage time a Jack Evans free-kick into the United box found Michael Spillane but his volley was just too high.

The second half was to see little in the way of clear cut chances but the main one that came saw the U’s draw level after 55 minutes when Evans’ free-kick from the left was met by the towering figure of Reindorf who headed past Smith.

The same combo connected 20 minutes later but this time the striker’s header was held by Smith. Within a minute United could have taken the lead for a second time, excellent work by the left corner flag from Murrell-Williamson saw him fend off the attentions of Spillane before picking out Beadle at the far stick but his header aimed for the bottom corner went into the side netting.

The last real chance of the game came ten minutes from time and drew the best save of the game from United stopper Grant Smith and again it was the Evans/Reindorf combination with the U’s striker stooping to head the ball towards the corner only for Smith to push the ball away diving to his left.
