Another three points, another clean sheet and a good all-round team performance earned caretaker boss Tristan Lewis and his coaching staff a permanent role until the end of the season and takes United into the midweek game against Staines confident but aware of the job ahead.

United never really struggled against a Farnborough side who seemed to lack ideas and now find themselves greater detached in the relegation spots and in such a crucial game it was vital to take the lead. That lead came for United in the twenty seventh minute.

A Luke Williams free kick from the left hand side of the box was parried clear by Magnus Norman in the Farnborough goal before Dominic Green headed the ball back goalbound from the edge of the box and Elliot Benyon got a telling touch to guide the ball beyond the diving Norman.

Farnborough failed to trouble Grant Smith in the United goal despite much of the next half hour being played inside the United half, the home side absorbing pressure higher up the field, a telling sign of a more organized team performance.

In the fifty ninth minute United then extended their lead with their and Benyon’s second of the game. Benyon took down an Adam Everitt clearance inside the centre circle and laid the ball back off to Green who took two touches to slide the ball back into Benyon’s path behind the defenders claiming for offside. The United forward then calmly took the ball into the box and drilled across Norman and into the far corner.

Benyon could and probably should have secured his hat-trick midway through the second half. The Farnborough defenders failed to deal with Luke Williams’ through ball and Benyon again nipped in behind this time to the left of the box but his shot lack power or precision when one-on-one with the goalkeeper and the ball struck Norman’s body for his defenders to clear.

Whilst the remainder of the half was nervy at times given the importance of the game, Farnborough never really looked likely winners and as the tackles came in thick and fast, along with the cards, United rode their luck a little but looked a stronger unit right until the final whistle.
