Ascot United 5
Hayes & Yeading XI 1

Combined Counties League Ascot United beat a young Hayes and Yeading United side which nevertheless featured first team captain Dean Inman, striker Pat Cox and Dan Wishart, returning for a trial.

Ascot in fact scored from their first attack, as the ball reached the far post and was cut back for a tap in after just 44 seconds.

United responded quickly with a looping Pat Cox header from Jake Rigby's deep cross, but the ball came down on the roof of the net.

On 7 minutes, Ascot's powerful centre forward connected with a corner from the left but his header from point blank range just cleared the crossbar. Another header at the other end almost brought an equaliser as Trecey Bambini beat the home keeper to Conor Tierney to the ball but directed it just wide. After Dan Wishart was denied at his feet by the keeper's challenge, Bambini got another header on target, after Tom Marr nodded the resulting corner back towards goal, but the keeper reacted quickly to catch.

The quarter of the hour mark heralded quite a flurry of activity. Ascot doubled their lead with a powerful strike from just outside the area, and after a rather harsh handball decision in the penalty arc, they scored again direct from the free kick a lot shot to George Upton's left. They were then awarded a penalty after a lunging challenge to block a shot made contact with the attacker, but Upton read the taker's intentions and saved low to his left.

The United bench responded with two substitutions, and Marr went close with a header at the far post from a corner.

Just before half time, United had two chances in quick succession. First, Jake Rigby's cross field ball found Turnell Sinclair, he laid the ball off to Jack Thomson-Wheeler who centred for Cox, but as the striker turned the ball goalwards, the home keeper parried the ball away. Then, Thomson-Wheeler fired just over from the edge of the area following another lay off, this time from Wishart.

The first opportunity of the second half came to Ascot as they beat the offside trap but the resulting volley was comfortably saved by Upton. Then, the home keeper dived low to his left to deny Wishart, who also went close from a direct free kick, just missing the right upright.

Ascot extended their lead on 58 minutes as former United winger Daryl McLean sent over a deep cross which was headed in by Damien Markman. Soon afterwards, McLean curled a fine shot from the edge of the area which just cleared the crossbar.

Wishart tested the home keeper with a powerful drive which was tipped over before Bambini cut inside and floated a shot which was comfortably gathered in. After a rather long lull in play, partly due to several substitutions from the home side, Upton did well to block a further close range effort after a mazy run. However, he was powerless to stop another fine direct free kick floated into the top corner from 30 yards out.

Nat Mensah hit a powerful drive across goal just missing the far post, but Hayes and Yeading's young side were to end up with a consolation as Prince Mbengiu picked out Wishart on the left and after feigning to shoot, he eventually drilled the ball firmly into the net from 15 yards. However, credit goes to Ascot who were impressive opponents and ended up as convincing winners.
