Hayes & Yeading United Football Club

HYUFC Hayes & Yeading Utd 3
Wealdstone 1

A very entertaining local derby played at a high tempo ended with Hayes and Yeading United's reserve team claiming their first victory of the season, thanks to goals from first team fringe players, Danny Burnell and Kelvin Bossman.

Wealdstone started strongly as Ahmed Jahar released Reece Grant down the left channel and his shot to the far post was tipped wide by debutant United keeper, George Upton. Although the resulting corner was taken short, former United full back Alex Duffy was allowed room to cross to the far post only for Tico Bogden to head back across goal and wide of the post. Stones' first teamer Peter Dean had the next sight of goal, but his curling effort just missed the far post.

United soon settled into the game and forced two smart saves from visiting keeper Gary Malone. The first he beat away Luke Bersey's long range shot and the second he dived to block Geoff Mitchell's point blank effort. The opening goal came from the resulting corner as Allen Bossman crossed to the near post and Burnell's perfectly timed run gave him an easy headed finish from close range. The visitors' response was immediate, however, with Dean given space to find the bottom corner with a shot from the edge of the area.

The frenetic pace was unrelenting. Kelvin Bossman should have put United straight back in front but fired wide after Mitchell found him in space. He made amends soon afterwards with a 25 yard free kick which left Malone disappointed having let it slip through his grasp.

The keeper's confidence clearly wasn't affected. Just moments later, Bersey's long throw in caused hesitancy in the Wealdstone back line, but as Burnell swivelled to shoot, his first effort was blocked by a flailing leg and the second was pushed away by Malone with some very impressive reactions.

Although United were in the ascendancy, the Stones looked particularly dangerous on the counter attack, one such move seeing Danny Ly advancing to the by line on the left hand side before cutting back to Grant whose shot was gathered by a fully stretched Upton. Grant also fired wide after good work by Dean down the right flank.

Eight minutes before the break, Kelvin Bossman extended United's lead by out muscling his marker and bursting into the area before slotting the ball past the advancing Malone.

United began the second half strongly, and Burnell raced onto Jack Thomson-Wheeler's throughball and unleashed a fierce shot which rose just too high. However, Wealdstone responded and a mazy run from Grant saw him round Upton but have his shot cleared off the line by a well positioned Andy Dean. They then had the ball in the net as Grant applied a fine finish, only to be denied by the offside flag.

Once again, the chances kept on coming in a match full of goalmouth drama. Taofiq Olomowewe rose highest to head Allen Bossman's corner goalwards but his effort was scrambled clear by some desperate Wealdstone defending. Wealdstone responded with their own corner, which Ly headed just over at the far post, and Burnell again showed quick thinking, along with Omar Mohamed, whose quick free kick found the forward in the penalty area, only for his shot to be charged down by the advancing Malone.

For the first time all evening, the match went into a lull, although the visitors should've got one back when Mustafa Mirzsi's low cross was fired goalwards by Bogden, and although Upton blocked his effort, Jerome Okimo fired the rebound well over with most of the goal to aim at. However, despite their best efforts, they were unable to build up any serious pressure and United saw the game out for their first three points of the season.
