With the Gander Green Lane pitch receiving a hammering from the recent bad weather, it was no surprise that the pitch was very heavy as United came out for this Boxing Day fixture against Sutton who at kick-off sat just one place above United in the table.

With the recent departures of Jake Reid and Matty Harriott, Manager Phil Babb threw new arrivals Steven Smith and Dan Thompson straight in at the deep end while unannounced new arrival saw Shane Stroud take a place on the bench.

The first opening of what was to be very few came to United in the tenth minute when Geoff Mitchell latched onto a clearance from Sam Rents that went vertical, the United strikers volley going the wrong side of the upright.

Five minutes later a fine passing move through the middle and out to the right by the hosts saw Lee Sawyer, Jamie Slabber and Damian Scannell involved with the latter fizzing a low ball across the box that just evaded a sliding Slabber who had continued his run into the box.

Just after the midway mark in the half the home side had a real break when Dan Thompson charged down an attempted clearance by U's keeper Tom Lovelock and despite the ball going across the area, only Rents was in the area and the former United loanee was able to clear up.

Six minutes from the break the best chance of the half saw a cross from the U's right side being met by Craig Dundas, his header came back to Slabber off the foot of the post and with only Jamie Young in his way, the striker screwed his effort wide.

Unfortunately as chances created go, the second half didn't improve even though it found two goals, sadly both for the home side.

Slabber again missed a golden chance to break the deadlock just five minutes in when he found himself unmarked at the far post to receive a Harry Osborne cross only to head straight at Young with the grateful United keeper clutching the ball to his chest.

United showed some good quality of their own minutes later when Thompson superbly brought down a long clearance before laying the ball off to Mitchell who advanced into the left side of the U's area before attempting to pull the ball back to the arriving Thompson or Luke Williams only for Charlie Clough to slide and divert the cross out for a corner.

Just after the hour mark United were dealt a blow when a throughball up the middle found Scannell who shifted the ball onto his left before planting it firmly past Young to give the home side the lead.

United continued to play the ball around as did the hosts but with both defences on top in the heavy conditions it was not until stoppage time when another opening came forth, and this was a killer blow for United as substitute Marvin Williams outpaced Dean Inman, who had just returned from receiving treatment, and fired past Young to seal the points for the home side.

United did finally force a save out of Lovelock in the third minute of stoppage time when Mitchell fed the ball inside to Huw Johnson, his 20 yard shot being tipped around the post by the U's keeper diving to his right.
